STAFF PRESENT: CALLED TO ORDER: APPROVAL OF MINUTES: REPORT OF LIBRARY DIRECTOR: Steve Brown December was a quiet month at the library and circulation figures were disappointing. With BISD classes resuming, library activity levels are expected to return to normal. Dawn Anderson, adult services supervisor, will be retiring at the end of February. The Human Resources department will be posting this position shortly. Improved patron Internet access will begin by the end of April. Last year's Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund Board grant provided funds for this added equipment and upgrades. A sample of the proposed new NRHPL library card was distributed. As part of the automation project, all current cards will be replaced with barcoded signature cards. We are currently recruiting volunteers to help with barcoding the entire collection in March. The History of NRH is expected to be published and available by the end of February. Information on TLA's Legislative Day in Austin in February is available for any interested board member. A summary report to council is expected in February from Dick Waters of Providence and Associates on long-range planning options. Board members will be mailed the summary as soon as it is finalized. While in Philadelphia next week for the ALA mid-winter conference, Mr. Brown will be looking at 3M's new self-cheek-out equipment. Steve Brown reviewed and discussed the new city organizational chart. Included in the shift of responsibilities and new assignments is a move for the library to Ron Ragland's work group. Mr. Brown updated the board on the automation project. Cabling has been installed, and the personal computers ordered. We are working with a third-party vendor to prepare the bibliograpnic data for MARC standard files. Hopefully, the library will close only for two or three days to rebarcode the collection. Following staff training, the new system may be up and running by mid-summer. The weekend of February 27 & 28 has been selected as the dates for the annual local library cooperative book sale at North Hills Mall. Mr. Brown asked for volunteers to work both Saturday and Sunday shifts. Discussion followed on the review of the December Library Board meeting with the Mayor and Council. Next meeting was scheduled for February 18, 1999. Meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m. Approved: Date: 3- /8- qq Board Chair: cijl!1.!Y\/ fA) oIjþe.../
