REPORT OF LIBRARY DIRECTOR: Steve Brown
The first full month of the new fiscal year saw circulation of library materials remaining strong, with
totals over 32,000 for the month. The statistical report has a new format in an effort to
compress the most helpful information to a single page.
The Library submitted an application for nearly $50,000 in grant funding from the state's
Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund. If awarded, the funds will be used to provide a high
speed Internet connection, with a number of workstations for staff and public use.
Since opening until 9 p.m. on Wednesdays last June, this night has become the second busiest of
the week.
Sandra McCurdy, former director of the Watauga Library, has joined us temporarily to fill 30 of the 40
hours of Jacqueline Davis, who is on medical leave.
Following a recent patron incident that resulted in calling in the police, staff will be further trained in
how to deal with difficult situations effectively and consistently.
Many libraries are including a "coffee bar" as part of the library services. The Board might want to
study the pros and cons of this idea in future.
The book sale at the North Hills Mall will be coming up in February. We need to decide if we want to
participate again this year.
Board members were invited to the annual Library Staff Christmas Luncheon on December 11, at
11 :30 a.m.
Discussion followed on the draft of the adult collection management plan. The strengths and
weaknesses of each area of the collection were detailed with plans for improvement over the next
few years as funds allow. Plans for the children's collection are in progress.
Mr. Brown recently met with architect Bill Hidell to examine prelininary proposals for remodeling of
several areas of the Library. The ceiling will be lowered with suspended lighting in the main entry to
the Library. The entrance to the children's area will renovated to make more welcoming. Board
examined the plans and viewed carpet samples. The consensus was to request that the architect
go forward with the plans to renovate and refurbish sections of the library as funds are
available.
Next meeting was scheduled for January 15, 1998. Meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m.
