CALLED TO ORDER:
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Mr. Brown introduced and welcomed new member William Merrill.
REPORT OF LIBRARY DIRECTOR: Steve Brown
Recent months statistics show a generally busy summer of activities at the library. The effects of
shortened summer school vacations on circulation were reflected in the small declines in
numbers of loans. 1,048 children and 306 adults logged a collective 24,575 hours of reading
for another very successful summer reading program.
The library is currently fully-staffed with the exception of the position of recently retired Marilyn Ellis.
The automation project has been placed on hold for the present time.
Three staff members were recognized for years of service at the annual city luncheon: Marianne
Cotterman (15), Liz Brockman (10), and Dep Liptak (5).
Staff will be applying for a $50,000 grant from the state to add Internet access computers at the
public service desk.
The city will connect departments to a wide-area-network next spring.
With an 8% discount, EBSCO offered the best rate for the 200+ library subscription renewals.
DFW Suburban Newspapers recently donated a nearly complete backfile of the Mid-Cities News.
Mr. Brown asked for input on the current and future use of the library meeting rooms. Following
discussion, meeting room policy will be included on the next meeting agenda with the current policy
and pertinent information included with the mailing.
Mr. Brown distributed handouts, reviewed, and responded to questions regarding the adopted FY
1998 budget. Included are a materials budget increase to $157,335, increased hours for library
pages, new carpet and bookshelves, funds to hire a library consultant team to help develop a long-
range plan for library services and facilities, and several smaller remodeling projects.
Extensive discussion followed on Mr. Brown's list of possible candidates for long-range consultant,
the funds available for this project, the needs assessment study, and concluding recommendations to
city council.
Election of officers for 1998: Joyce Moody nominated and Polly Brinkley seconded current Vice
Chair Lynn Waller as Chair. As Mr. Waller had to leave the meeting early, election of officers was
tabled until the October meeting. Kay Schmidt was elected by consensus as the Representative to
the North Texas Regional Library System for 1997-99.
Next meeting was scheduled for October 16, 1997. Meeting adjourned at 9: 1 0 p.m.
