APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
REPORT OF LIBRARY DIRECTOR: Steve Brown
Library use continued steady in January. There has been a pattern of heavy use on Saturdays that
appears to be a growing trend. This may signal a need to adjust staffing.
Circulation is fully staffed with the addition of a part-time clerk in training. However, the reference
librarian position is still unfilled.
Toddler Time begins on February 25 in the Children's Department. Helen Krejci will attempt to
introduce a love of the library early with a 15-minute presentation each week.
We will be applying for a grant sponsored by Laura Bush's Texas Book Festival. This program,
designed "to put a book in the middle of the family circle," will offer $125,000 to Texas
libraries.
Mr. Brown participated in Texas Legislative Day in Austin and the mid-winter American Library
Association conference in Washington, D.C. over the last few weeks.
Copies of the finalized Library's Plan of Service for 1997-2002 were distributed.
Mr. Brown distributed and reviewed the Library's Internet Access Policy. The policy was written as a
result of a recent incident involving a library patron's use of Internet e-mail. Copies of the policy are
available at the reference desk. Parents can learn from an informative article, Child Safety on the
Information Highway, also available at the reference desk.
Board members previewed the draft of the Library's WWW Home Page. Volunteer Glenda Gill has
worked with information provided by staff. When completed, the info will be added to the city's home
page.
Along with other local libraries, NRHPL will be participating in the Friends of the Library Book Sale at
the North Hills Mall on February 22 and 23. NRHPL has been assigned a high-traffic location near
the food court. Board members will be working at the sale tables along with Mr. Brown.
Next meeting was scheduled for March 20, 1997. Meeting adjourned at 8 p.m.
