The collection size dropped because of an extensive weeding program which is now essentially complete. A handout of the library materials budget allocations by category was reviewed. The conduit bridges built by Paragon Furniture restored the lights in the adult non-fiction area. John Lewis of Paragon will be acknowledged by the city and library for the generous contribution of free labor and materials at cost for this project. Children's Librarian Prudence Lucas has accepted the new reference/children's librarian position. We will now advertise to replace her. Two 20-hour positions recently became full-time at the circulation desk. With the departure of Amy Rollish, a circulation clerk job will be posted. The reference desk will be short-staffed during the next two months with a 20-hour person out on medical leave and vacations of other staff members. Acting Director Lynne Handy has been hired as the new executive director of NTRLS. Steve Brown has been elected chair of the NTRLS Planning & Advisory Committee. The City Hall Open House is scheduled for Saturday, October 19, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. The Annual Reception for City Boards and Commissions will be held on Thursday evening, October 24, at 7 p.m. at Iron Horse Clubhouse. Review of the current Library Plan of Service which began at the September meeting continued. Following extensive discussion of the library goals and objectives for the next five years, the consensus was for Kay Schmidt and Steve Brown to meet and compile a draft plan incorporating board suggestions and present at the November meeting. Board Chair Kay Schmidt asked for nominations for Library Board Chair and Vice-Chair. Following discussion, nomination by Mary Shilcutt and the willingness of both current library board officers to serve another term, Kay Schmidt and Lynn Waller were re-elected by consensus to serve as the 1996/97 Library Board Chair and Vice Chair respectively.
