APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Kay Schmidt introduced and welcomed new library board member Carol Benoit.
Children's Services Supervisor Liz Logan summarized our very successful summer reading
program, "Once Upon a Planet." Participants included 1,035 children and adults of whom 400
received certificates. Weekly programs and movies were presented during the summer. The
1996 program will celebrate the Olympic Games.
REPORT OF LIBRARY DIRECTOR: Betty Russell, Acting Library Director
Recent statistics include an increase for fiscal 1994/95 of 3.7% in circulation and 5.5% in
reference questions with 9,910 items added to the collection.
The past few weeks have included much activity with the installation of a new heating/air
conditioning system, completion of the painting project in the children's
department, and replacement of the under the carpet computer cabling in the
circulation and reference areas. These projects are being accomplished with as
little inconvenience to patrons as possible.
Bids for Phase 2 of the lighting project were opened on November 15, and the results will
be presented to Council at the November 27 meeting.
All new Xerox copiers have been installed in the library. The public machines have coin
boxes and a bill changer. Staff has been very pleased with the improved copy
quality.
A new art display unit has been placed in the circulation area. Art prints have been
circulated for a long while; hopefully, patrons will be more aware of the selection
with this arrangement.
The 1994/95 library highlights/achievements were submitted to city administration. Mrs. Russell
reviewed these with the Board.
Following discussion on pending matters including library foundations, Friends of the Library, and
a marketing plan, Mrs. Russell stated that during this interim period some projects have been
placed on hold.
Although Assistant City Manager Larry Cunningham was unable to attend the meeting, he sent a
memo to each board member to update the status of the recruiting process for a library director.
Invitations to the Library Staffs Christmas Luncheon in honor of Board Members and Library
Volunteers were distributed to each member.
Next meeting was scheduled for January 18, 1996. Meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
