LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES
KARCH 18, 1993
BOARD PRESENT:
Vice-Chair Kay Schmidt, Polly Brinkley, Jan Daniels,
Rosemary Herod, Mary Shilcutt
ABSENT:

CALLED TO ORDER:
Vice-Chair Kay Schmidt at 7 p.m.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Minutes of February 18 were approved as written.
REPORT OF LIBRARY MANAGER - Wvnette Schwalm
** Recently met with Rosemary Herod's brother, who is a lighting consul-
tant, and discussed the present lighting of the public services areas of
the library. Recommendations for options to improve the lighting
situation will be included in this years's budget proposal.
** The 1993/94 budget process has begun. Prioritized items to be budgeted
through other city departments have been submitted. Included are upgrade
of library computer system, improved heating/air conditioning/lighting,
restructuring the book drop, and computer equipment.
** Following discussion of February statistics, Wynette will review
February figures and report next month.
REPORT OF LIBRARY ACTIVITIES
Mignon Morse reported on the excellent Texas Library Association Conference in
San Antonio that she, Children's Coordinator Liz Logan, and Assistant Manager
Betty Russell attended earlier in March. Betty chaired the very successful
"New Technology Showcase" exhibit for the second year.
FUTURE PROGRAMS
Mignon Morse - The second program in the American Culture Series is scheduled
for March 25. Mignon noted that the first review was superbly presented by
English Professor Virginia Reedy of TCJC. She reminded the Board that the
books to be reviewed are available for check out and invited board to attend
upcoming programs.
The Earth Day celebration is scheduled for Saturday, April 17, from 10:30 -
11:30. First 50 participants to arrive will receive a coupon for a free tree
from the NRH Parks Division.
Kay Schmidt - The Library will host Battle of the Books to be held April 22 in
the NRH Recreation Center. BISD and Irving ISD middle schools will compete
from prepared questions on selected books.
LIBRARY PLAN OF SERVICE FOR 1993-1998
Following discussion on each of the updated goals and objectives included in
the 5-year plan, Mary Shilcutt moved, Polly Brinkley seconded, and the motion
carried to accept as presented the Library Plan of Service for 1993-1998.
Next meeting was scheduled for April 15. Meeting adjourned at 8:35 p.m.
