HomeMy WebLinkAboutLIB 1992-11-19 Minutes CITY OF NORTH RICHLAND HILLS LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES NOVEMBER 19, 1992 BOARD PRESENT: Jay Bradshaw, Chair Kay Schmidt, Vice-Chair Polly Brinkley Jan Daniels Shirley Goolsby Rosemary Herod Alisa Wood Mary Shilcutt STAFF PRESENT: Jim Browne, Community Services Director Betty Russell, Library Assistant Director Mignon Morse, Library Assistant Director Brenda Lewis, Secretary GUEST: Wynette Schwalm CALLED TO ORDER: Chairman Jay Bradshaw at 7:03 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Mary Shilcutt moved, Jan Daniels seconded, and motion carried to approve the minutes of the May 21, 1992 meeting. ITEM 3: LIBRARY MANAGER POSITION Jim Browne introduced the new library manager, Ms. Wynette Schwalm. Ms. Schwalm will be joining the library staff on December 14. She is currently the Meadowbrook Branch Manager in the Fort Worth Library System. with 20 years of experience (the last 10 years with the FW system), Ms. Schwalm has worked in many areas including adult services, interlibrary loans, and school, university, and health libraries. Ms. Schwalm said that she is very excited about her new position and is looking forward to joining the staff. Mr. Browne thanked assistant directors Mignon Morse and Betty Russell for their successful effort in maintaining library services in this interim period. The assistant directors will be attending future board meetings. Mr. Browne also expressed his appreciation to Board Chair Jay Bradshaw and Friends President and Board Member Jan Daniels for their assistance in the recent extensive library manager selection process. ITEM 4: REPORT OF LIBRARY ACTIVITIES - BETTY RUSSELL NRHPL hosted 153 people at the September 24 meeting of the North Texas Library System meeting. North Texas area circulation supervisors attended a meeting here on November 5. The'lib:¡;aL-y closed on October 30 as the staff shifted library materials to 'accommbdate the newly installed range of shelving. Plans are being made to invite an outside collection development consultant to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the collection next spring. The North Texas Library System will fund the consultation. ITEM 5: REPORT OF UPCOMING PROGRAMS - MIGNON MORSE December April The Salvation Army Toy and Food Drive Earth Day Celebration to be coordinated with Jane Dunkelberg of the NRH Beautification Committee 3rd Annual Night of a Thousand Stars ITEM 6: EXTENDING LIBRARY HOURS The Library will open at 9 a.m. beginning November 30. The extension of library hours has been included in the Library's Plan of Service since 1989 as a goal to be accomplished in 1992. ITEM 7: LIBRARY DISTRICT MEETING AND FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY - JAN DANIELS A committee has been formed to study the legalities of the possibility of forming a library district. Another meeting will be scheduled for the spring of 1993. Mrs. Daniels will keep the Board informed. She would like to involve the Friends of the Library in fundraising projects in the spring. ITEM 8: OPEN DISCUSSION Mignon Morse presented Friends President Jan Daniels with a $300 check from the Northeast Lion's Club. The funds are allocated to purchase videos for the blind. Jim Browne shared some of his management philosophy with the Board on the various roles of the advisory board and management team. As recommended reading, the 1992 Texas State Library's "Public Library Advisory Board Handbook" was distributed to each member. The next meeting date was scheduled for December 17.
