HomeMy WebLinkAboutLIB 2007-04-19 Minutes MINUTES OF THE LIBRARY BOARD OF THE CITY OF NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, TEXAS HELD IN THE LIBRARY BOARD ROOM LOCATED AT 6720 NORTHEAST LOOP 820 Present: Kay Schmidt David Nelson Don Tipps Mary Shilcutt Jane Birkes Avis Crisp Absent: Mike Madar Kathy Antropik Staff Members: Steve Brown Kelly Preston April 19, 2007 Chair Vice-Chair Board Member Board Member Board Member Board Member Board Member Alternate Library Director Administrative Secretary CALL TO ORDER Chair Kay Schmidt called the meeting to order April 19, 2007 at 6:07 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Minutes of the March 15,2007 meeting were approved as written. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT Mr. Steve Brown updated the Library Board on the following: The Adult Services staff held a training session for four local non-profit organizations on how to use Foundation Center resources. There are plans for an electronic kiosk in the career resources area on the second floor of the new library. The kiosk will be updated daily with job opportunities and related information. The Texas Library Association conference was held April 11th through April 13th in San Antonio, Texas. Next year's conference will be in Dallas. Guest speakers will include Dave Barry and Kathy Patrick, operator of Beauty and the Book and the world's largest book club, Pulpwood Queens Book Club. Linda Evans, Adult Services Supervisor accepted a position with Arlington Public Library. Her last day with North Richland Hills will be May tho Following Richard Torres' resignation, Jim Starr, retired city manager of Hurst, will serve as interim Assistant City Manager. He will be working with the Library, Parks and Recreation, Fire, Economic Development, Iron Horse Golf Course, and Construction Management. The budget for next fiscal year has been submitted to the Budget Department. Budget requests include additional part-time employees to staff the new library, and more funding for book purchases to help maintain bigger collections. Mr. David Nelson asked if additional part-time staff would allow for the Library to open on Sunday. Steve said at this time there are no plans for opening on Sunday. Library patrons will not be fined for overdue books during the move to the new library. Mr. Brown met with City Administration on funding for the RFIO tags, and it will be presented for City Council's approval at a workshop this summer. UPDATE ON LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION Construction Crews are finishing pouring the grade beams for the new library in preparation for the slab. There have been many weather delays since construction began in December, 2006. Chair Kay Schmidt asked about the size of the parking lot at the new library. Steve said it will have approximately 150 spaces, meeting code requirements. NRH20 will operate the coffee shop at the new library at least through the first year. Starbucks coffee, soft drinks, and other snacks will be served. There will not be any vending machines in the new library. Staff will receive a discount on coffee shop purchases. CONSIDER CITIZEN'S REQUEST THAT VETERANS BE EXEMPTED FROM LIBRARY FINES It was the consensus of the Board that veterans not be exempted from library fines. LIBRARY BOARD MEMBER REPORTS Ms. Mary Shilcutt asked if there are plans for another community reading program. Steve said the library will focus on another program in the upcoming year. Mr. Brown will be meeting with Karen Newell of Artsnet on programming. Mr. Brown said library patrons frequently request that loan periods on DVD movies be increased to one week. Ms. Jane Birkes asked if the requests include VHS movies. Steve said they are being weeded out heavily while the library build's a bigger DVD movie collection. The Board will be tentatively having their annual Library staff appreciation ice cream social on August 8th after Summer Reading Club. NEXT MEETING DATE The next Library Board meeting will be Thursday, May 17, 2007 at 6:00 p.m. in the Library Board Room. ADJOURNMENT Meeting adjourned at 7:26 p.m. ATTEST: r.
