2. Approval of minutes from last meeting
Committee Member Jay Garner motioned to approve the minutes from the April 17, 2007
meeting; Committee Member Dianne Spradling seconded the motion.
The Minutes were approved as written.
3. Partnership opportunities for existing programs
Debbie York explained that Geoffrey Sherman, the new Horticulturist for the City, was
scheduled to attend the meeting, but had to cancel due to a prior commitment. He should be
available for the August meeting. Had he been in attendance, Debbie planned to discuss
programs in which he will be involved along with the Parks Dept. Some potential programs
included the creation of a Community Garden or Arboretum, similar to the one in South lake
and other neighboring cities. Geoff would also be involved in the Committee's educational
programs. Interest has been shown in developing a data base of plants and trees that are best
suited for our area. The Commission members welcomed this partnership and look forward to
participating in these exciting programs.
4. Agenda items for July meeting
Due to several members being absent and the lack of pending issues, it was decided that the
July meeting would be canceled.
5. LitterNot School Program
The LitterNot School Challenge guidelines that were discussed at earlier meetings were
reviewed and the program is scheduled to begin in September, with the kick-off at the Trash
Bash. The challenge will be given to students in 5th through 8th grades and will run through
April with the rewards of NRH20 passes for students and luncheon for participating faculty.
Debbie York will create a brochure with the rules for the Challenge and present it to the board
at the August meeting for approval. The possibility of recognizing individual effort versus class
room achievement was briefly discussed.
6. Staff Report
Debbie York explained Davis Blvd. Project and gave update to Committee.
Debbie York advised that the Committee had received 3rd place in the Governor's Community
Achievement Award and that Neighborhood Services received 1st place in the Keep Texas
Beautiful government category. Those awards will be accepted at the Keep Texas Beautiful
Conference in San Antonio on July 11th and 12th.
An activity book and information on a Patch Pal program that Austin is using was passed
around to the members for their review. It was decided this would be a possible future
program to encourage involvement of students in KNRHB programs.
Committee Member Jay Garner asked about the LOOKS Program and Debbie York gave an
update. He was particularly concerned about homeowners who allow their shrubs and trees to
be profusely overgrown.
7. Adiournment
Micah Beck adjourned the meeting at 7:25pm.
