LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT Mr. Steve Brown updated the Library Board on the following: Library patrons can begin reserving Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows beginning July 21st after midnight. There are thirty total copies on print, tape and disc. North Richland Hills Library hosted "From Sea to Shining Sea: 200 Years of Charting America's Coasts", a celebration of the history, accomplishments and scientific contributions of the nation's first science agency. The exhibit, produced by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and NOAA, was on display from June 21st through July 14th, The last day of Summer Reading Club is July 21 st. Participation in the program was good this year. Louanne Noel, Reference Librarian resigned on July 6th and Brenda Talley, former Reference Librarian, was promoted to Library Services Supervisor on July 9th, There are currently two reference librarian positions open. The Book Sale will tentatively be held on September 29th, 2007. The annual City Council Budget Workshop is currently in progress. City staff is recommending that Council approve funding for the RFID system. If approved by Council, funding from the capital budget will be available October 1st. Approval has been given to purchase a microfilm reader from this year's budget. The reader will replace three older models that are currently in the library. Council approved the award of two bid packages for library furnishings. The bid for shelving was awarded to Library Design Systems of Houston. The bid for the reader seating package, which is most of the tables and chairs, was awarded to Jasper. A third bid package for office furniture and other seating is still pending. The bid package will likely be split and awarded to three separate companies for the best possible price, The usage of adult fiction has increased since the books were interfiled by author. Patrons are able to easily find their favorite author with the new arrangement. UPDATE ON LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION Mr. Steve Brown presented the Board with a PowerPoint illustration of the library building under construction. The second level slab will be poured July 20th. Exterior walls are being studded, and crews are beginning to erect interior wall frames. The brick will be laid on the exterior of the building within the next eight to ten days. The contractor has lost 114 days of construction so far due to inclement weather conditions since early December 2006 and one contract extension for changes in the design of the lobby, Substantial completion is scheduled for late December. The furniture will be moved in late January, and the opening is scheduled for early March, 2008. LIBRARY BOARD MEMBER REPORTS Chair Kay Schmidt asked if the City notified former Library Board Chair, Polly Brinkley about plans to honor her at the opening of the new library. Mr. Steve Brown said it is likely she was contacted. Following the Library Board's recommendation, City Council approved the naming of the Children's Department within the library as "Brinkley Children's Library" in honor of Charles and Polly Brinkley and the activity room as "Polly's Room", The name of the Library will remain as "North Richland Hills Public Library". NEXT MEETING DATE The next Library Board meeting will be Thursday, September 20, 2007 at 6:00 p.m. in the Library Board Room.
