Call to order Chairperson Kathy Luppy called to order the meeting of the Keep NRH Beautiful Commission at 6:45 p.m. on October 16, 2007 in the Neighborhood Services Office. Roll Call The following persons were present: Commission Members: Kathy Luppy Chairperson Holly Bullington Commission Member Jay Garner Commission Member Darla Batchler Commission Member Dianne Spradling Commission Member Absent: Doris Tipps Commission Member Dianna Mader Commission Member Teresa Hebert Commission Member Staff Members: Debbie York Environ. Res. Coordinator Candice Simmons Secretary 2. Approval of minutes from last meeting Chairperson Kathy Luppy motioned to approve the minutes from the September 18, 2007 meeting; Committee member Holly Bullington seconded the motion. The Minutes were approved as written. 3. Review of Green Campus Applications The Commission discussed the two applications they have received from Snow Heights and North Ridge Elementary. Snow Heights has an environmental club called Green Paws that recycles newspaper, cell phones and ink cartridges. They also discussed the Courtyard our program funded that has been completed. North Ridge Elementary goes to Grady Spruce for their environmental education program. Kathy hosts the Saving Ranger Club, Adopt a Spot and is also recycling paper, newspaper and other items. Both Snow Heights Elementary and North Ridge Elementary scored high enough to qualify for the Green Campus Award in 2007. Debbie York informed the Commission of an inquiry from Green Valley on the Green Campus Award application. Debbie York will also send out a reminder to the schools about the Green Campus Award. Any applications received will be scored at the next meeting. 3. Christmas LishtinS Contest The commission decided that this year's contest will be held on December 9, 2007, and each member and staff will nominate two houses from each area. The members were assigned one area to judge. Area 1: Teresa Hebert Area 2: Doris Tipps Area 3: Jay Garner Area 4: Dianna Madar Area 5: Dianne Spradling Area 6: Kathy Luppy Area 7: Darla Batchler Area 8: Debbie York Area 9: Holly Bullington The schedule for the members to work the train at the Night of Holiday Magic will be discussed at the November meeting. Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, the members agreed to move the November meeting to Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at 6:45p.m. 4. Staff Report Debbie informed the Commission of a new Adopt a Spot on Holiday Lane and Liberty Way sponsored by the Girl Scout Troop from the Trash Bash. Debbie discussed a newsletter she had received from Keep Texas Beautiful. They have changed the due date for the award application to February 12, 2008. It was changed due to conflicting programs in the month of May. The Park's Discover: Project Green event will be on March 29, 2008 at Crosstimbers Park. This event will feature speakers discussing nature, plants and composting. Debbie informed the Commission about another new Park's program called Green Teens. The plan is to have a pilot of this program possibly at Birdville High School. One of the projects planned for Green Teens is to plant a garden and use the vegetables to make a salsa. Debbie will be assisting by applying for grants to help fund the program. Holly asked about the possibility of a community garden in NRH. Debbie said she knew that the Parks Master Plan is being revised and that staff would like to see a community garden in NRH. Debbie told the Commission members that the City's horticulturalist is identifying and registering large trees in the city, which is similar to the old Trophy Tree program that was done fifteen years ago. Kathy suggested reviewing the tree ordinance after the holidays. Debbie reminded the members of the N. E. Recycles Day Flea Market being held on Saturday, November 10, 2007.
