LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT Mr. Steve Brown updated the Board on the following: Brenda Talley was promoted to Library Services Supervisor. Amanda Torrealba and Donna Gooch were hired to fill two vacant Librarian positions. Donna Gooch recently resigned to accept a better position at Euless Public Library. Budget requests for the move to the new library, including the request for nine additional part-time staff and one upgraded part-time to full-time position, were approved. The request for an increase of the book budget was also approved. Past budget cuts have contributed to the decline in circulation over the past couple of years. Circulation levels are expected to increase once new library materials are purchased with new budget funds. However, circulation will decrease while the library closes for several weeks during the move to the new building. There were 1,504 participants registered in this year's Summer Reading Club. The number of hours-read was higher than in years past. North Richland Hills Library will be participating in a study conducted by Texas State Library, Colorado State Library and others that will measure the effectiveness of Summer Reading programs. North Richland Hills Library is trying to work with BISD to see how well kids who participate in Summer Reading programs do on standardized tests compared to kids who do not participate. Mr. Brown asked the Board to consider Mr. Don Tipps' suggestion to email the Library Board packets rather than using U.S. Mail. It was the consensus of the Board to have the packets emailed prior to the meetings. UPDATE ON LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION Mr. Steve Brown presented the Board with a PowerPoint illustration of the library building under construction. The exterior brick is still being laid and acid washed. The ceiling may be lowered as much as four, inches in order to fit the above ducting, sprinklers, and lighting. The contractor is predicting substantial completion between January 4th and January Stn 2008 even though the contract says January 28th, 2008. The first delivery of furniture will be in January. The movers are scheduled to begin in late January or early February. The Library will close on the first day the collection is scheduled to be moved. Opening day is now expected to be at the end of March or beginning of April. Mr. David Nelson asked when staff would begin tagging items with RFID. Steve said the Request for Proposal for RFID should be out next week and due back October 10th before the next Council meeting. Once tagging begins, it will take three, two-person teams working ten to twelve weeks to complete the job. Mr. David Nelson asked if any of the existing shelving will be moved to the new library. Steve said all of the tall shelving will be moved to the new library. A roof drain in the Children's Library had to be relocated from its original location. Due to the new location of the drain, there will be one less three-foot section of wall shelving in the Children's Library. There were also some alterations to the landscaping, and the increased cost will be covered by the contingency plan. Steve invited the Board to tour the library construction site. The Board agreed to meet for the tour on Friday, October 5t", 2007. LIBRARY BOARD MEMBER REPORTS Chair Kay Schmidt confirmed the Book Sale date of September 29t". Steve invited the Board to come out to the Sale. For more than a year, North Richland Hills Library has been selling books through the Book Exchange to try and get more than $1 per book. In August, the Library started mailing (postage paid) books to B-Logistics who sells books for a percentage of the profits.
