3. Clean Campus Award
Micah Beck brought up the issue of changing the name of the Clean Campus Award to better
reflect that it is not fora "clean" school but for environmental purposes. He suggested the
name of Green Campus Award. After a brief discussion, Holly Bullington made a motion to
accept that name and Doris Tipps seconded that motion, which was unanimously approved by
the Committee. New signs will be ordered.
4. 2007 Environmental Education Grant Applications
North Ridge Elementary applied for $100.00 for the "North Ridge Kinder Garden" Program.
Project consists of Kindergarten students planting and maintaining a garden. Committee
recommends that organic fertilizer be used. As this increases the costs, Grant amount of
$150.00 was discussed.
Walker Creek Elementary has applied for $994.12 for the "We CAN at Walker Creek" Program
which involves purchasing outdoor trash receptacles. The Committee discussed the program,
with a consensus that this is not student involved and does not meet the criteria for the Grant
funding.
Smithfield Elementary has applied for $275.58 for the "Smithfield Recycles!" Program, which
involved purchasing and placing bins for recyclable paper in some classrooms. It was
discussed that this was a good plan and that the 5~" Grade will earn money from the recycling.
Clear plastic bins will be decorated by the students.
North Ridge Middle has applied for $689.00 for their "Courtyard Beautification" Program which
involves 70 students being involved in cleaning up and planting the courtyard area. Committee
discussed who would benefit from this program and was it feasible considering the watering
situation during the summer as it is not on a sprinkler system. Comments were made about
adding hints on how to use recycled and organic materials to the Information distributed at the
beginning of the Program.
Holly Bullington suggested that in the future a Committee member visit each school applying
for a Grant so that detailed information can be discussed when the vote is taken.
Snow Heights Elementary has applied for $425.00 to fund part of their "Snow Heights
Elementary Earth Day 2007". Program consists of activities for each grade involving
beautification, recycling and plant maintenance.
