Chair Kay Schmidt called the meeting to order January 17, 2008 at 6:00 p.m.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Minutes of the November 15, 2007 meeting were approved as written.
LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Mr. Steve Brown updated the Board on Library usage and statistics:
December circulation is down, but it is expected to increase since budget funds for new
book purchases were increased this year.
The after-school kids continue to be disruptive in the Library. The police were called
because of a gang fight in the parking lot. Mr. Don Tipps mentioned that he heard a
complaint regarding the disruptive behavior of after school kids at the Library. Mr.
Brown said a community service worker has committed to working with the kids
everyday in the afternoons.
Tutor.com will now be handling Answer Zone calls twenty-four hours a day, seven days
a week. The new service will cost less, and relieve the Reference Staff from answering
Answer Zone calls.
Adult programming is expanding to include an Alzheimer's program and a writer's
group.
The City has recently upgraded part-time employee pay plans. The new pay plans will
go into effect January 19, 2008.
PROGRESS REPORT AND DEMONSTRATION OF RFID PROJECT
Mr. Brown demonstrated how RFID tags are programmed and applied to library
materials. The security gates at the new library will remain off for a few weeks to allow
time for library materials with RFID tags to be returned without triggering the alarm.
Most of the collection will be tagged before it is moved to the new Library.
UPDATE ON LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION
The new Library is expected to be substantially complete by February 4, 2008. The
Library is scheduled to close February 11. The book drop will remain open during this
time. Landscape crews are preparing to install plants and shrubs, and most of the
sidewalks have been poured.
DISCUSSION OF SCHEDULING FOR FUTURE LIBRARY BOARD MEETINGS
It was the consensus of the Board to discuss the scheduling of future Library Board
meetings at the September, 2008 Library Board meeting.
NEXT MEETING DATE
The next Library Board meeting will be Thursday, February 28, 2008 at 6:00 p.m, in the
