Quarterly Shelter Count
Monthly Report
Pam Burney informed the Board
that NRH Animal Services would
be participating in an adoption
survey being conducted by
Colorado State University. NRH
Animal Services is one of the
few shelters in the country asked
to participate in this survey, and
for doing so, will receive a $500.00
donation. It was suggested that
some type of notification about the
survey be placed in each NRH
adoption packet. However, Pam
Burney advised she would speak
with Dr. Mo Salman before taking
this action to ensure survey results
are not skewed.
Pam Burney reported to board
members that the rabies epidemic
is getting worse rather than getting
better. Since January 1, 2001,
four skunks captured in North
Richland Hills have tested positive

information from
the Veterinarian's
Assn. on possible
funding.
for the rabies virus and most of
them were found on the north end
of town. However, one skunk that
tested positive was captured at
Iron Horse Golf Course. Jan Buck,
with the Texas Department of
Health, recommends euthanizing
all raccoons, skunks and feral cats
captured in the area where most of
the rabies cases have been found
since there is no way of knowing
whether or not they are carrying
the virus. Pam Burney informed
board members that Animal
Services staff have gone door-to-
door handing out rabies flyers, the
newspapers have been notified of
the problem, and a video about
rabies is being shown on Citicable
in order to inform the public about
the rabies problem. Since T.D.H.
recommends euthanizing skunks,
raccoons, and feral cats found in
the "problem" area, NRH Animal
Services Officers will begin setting
traps in order to capture them.
Warren Cox asked if the Tarrant
County Veterinarian's Association
is doing anything to notify their
clients or the public about the
rabies epidemic in the area and Dr.
Ford's response was "occasionally
the T.C.v.A. works with the City of
Fort Worth Animal Control to offer
low cost vaccination clinics".
Warren Cox asked Dr. Ford to get
information/guidelines on possible
funding from the Veterinarian's
Association and then suggested
involving pharmaceutical
companies to see if they could
offer some type of help. Pam
Burney said she will speak to the
North Central Texas Animal
Shelter Coalition about contacting
T.C.V.A. as a group, to see if they
would be interested in helping in
some way.
Pam Burney will
contact
N.C.T.A.S.C. and
ask if they would
like to approach
pharmaceutical
companies, as a
group, and ask for
help.

Critter
Connection
Pam Burney announced that the
focus of this year's Adopt-A- Thon
would be off-site adoptions, with a
Fiesta theme, followed by the
annual Walk-A-Thon. N.R.H.
Animal Services will be having
their big event at the Critter
Connection.
A planning session is scheduled
for February 8, to discuss plans for
an area wide Adopt-A-Thon.
Don Sharp reported the 15t quarter
2000/2001 statistics for Critter
Connection.
Days Open 7
Volunteer Hours 223.50
Total Adoptions 60
Animals Returned 6
One sick, two were destructive,
one clashed with existing pet, one
didn't like children, one was
returned because the owner found
out she was pregnant. Of those
returned, four were re-adopted,
one died, and one is still at the
shelter.
Adoptions are down approximately
20% from this same period last
year, which can be attributed to
reduced mall traffic.

*Correction from IR
Don Sharp informed board
members that an additional day
has been added to the pet therapy
Adjournment
program. Volunteers are currently
going twice a week to nursing
homes but will increase it to three
times.
Pam Burney told board members
that North Hills Mall
representative, Steven King
notified her that a tenant would like
to rent the space currently
occupied by the Critter
Connection. Mr. King did say,
however, that they do not want to
lose the Critter Connection and
offered a space right next door to
the current location.
