A suggestion was made to have another adoption program the first week in November, in celebration of National Animal Shelter Week. Pam Burney also reported the Animal Coalition has been selling Animal Friendly license plates to raise money which is deposited into the State spay/neuter fund. The fund is currently at $89,000 and the Coalition has been granted a 4-year extension. Fund Raising Report Pam Burney reports revenues for the following programs: Critter Connection & Shelter Merchandise sales Gross $59,258.89 Net $27,394.00 Cars for Critters $4399.00 Water Bill Donations Current $13,890.39 *Retained $183,298.96 Donation Jars $1,826.02 Individual Donations $14,144.61 Special Events: Paws to Recycle $3,000.00 Paws for the Cause $2,364.00 Spay/Neuter/Injured Animal $1,060.00 *Originally the Shelter Fund balance Finance gave us was $112,112.54. It is actually $183,298.96 Building Expansion There is currently $190,286.84 available in the building expansion fund. A decision package was submitted with the 1999/2000 but was moved to unfunded ITEM DISCUSSION ACTION TAKEN Capital Projects. A request has been made by Pam Burney to go forward with design work for for the expansion, which will be based upon the Boards decision to move towards zero euthanasia of adoptable animals. Pam Burney also suggested moving some of the money into the Injured Animal Fund and the Spay/Neuter Fund. Another option would be to put money into a contingency fund for a Mobile Adoption Unit. The unit could be used either in addition to the Critter Connection or instead of, if the mall closes or decides to start charging for the storefront. Animal Services can apply for grants through Petsmart Charities which will help with the expense. Volunteers could operate the mobile unit. It could travel throughout the metroplex stopping at school carnivals, sporting events, grand openings and could even travel to the new Towne Center. This would make adoptions and the purchase of animal licenses much more convenient for the public. Volunteer Program Support Animal Services would like to implement two new programs, which would help, keep adopted animals from coming back to the shelter. One of the programs involves behavior training for animals, which would normally be classified as un- adoptable. Teaching basic commands, such as sit, stay, come and not to jump, will turn these "un-adoptable" animals into adoptable ones. Thus cutting down on the number of animals that are returned to the shelter which in turn cuts down on the number that must be euthanised. The second program is a follow-up program. A few days after the animal is adopted, a volunteer will phone the adopter, to see how the animal and its new owner are doing. The volunteer can also offer tips for some of the problems the owner might be having. A month after the adoption, the owner will again be contacted, in order to remind the owner of vaccinations and to offer tips for caring and living with the new pet. The ITEM DISCUSSION ACTION TAKEN program will require volunteers, who could actually work out of their homes making the phone calls, with minimal time spent at the shelter. Mary Ann Townsend reported several volunteers came up to her at the Volunteer Appreciation picnic held at NRH20, and said they would be interested in volunteering for the programs. Dr. Joe Metcalf, D.V.M. suggested we contact Dr. Lacricia Tolirero about offering a training class that could be held at the shelter after hours. Other Items Pam Burney reported the annual T.A.C.A. conference has a program especially for veterinarians this year. Warren Cox reported a Feral Cat conference February 2000, in Dallas. Don Sharp reported 1830 licenses have been issued, 369 dogs and 215 cats have been adopted, and 1407 animals have been euthanized. Don Sharp reported animal license reminder notices are being sent out. Animal Services also reports they have had little success in their attempt to capture the geese in Meadow Lakes. They have contacted other shelters and agencies to get recommendations to no avail. The Animal Services Division will continue to round up the geese so they can be moved to other areas. Adjournment Motion by Warren Cox to adjourn, second Approved by Dr. Joe Metcalf, D.V.M.. Meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
