ANIMAL SHELTER ADVISORY BOARD MEETING
February 15, 1995

Call to Order The meeting was called to order at I I
6:30 p.m.by Dr. Joe Metcalf.
Approval of Minutes: 08/12/94 Motion to approve the minutes by Lyle I Passed I
Meeting Welch, second by Warren Cox.
Public Awareness Officer P. Burney told the Board that the S. Carter - Follow up on
Public Awareness Officer is now on training
board, has done two presentations, is
in the process of developing a
coloring book for use in training in
schools and that the position has
enabled Animal Services to now have
four shifts and to be open from 10:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.
L. Welch inquired about the duties of
the Public Awareness Officer and the
advantages of having the officer.
S. Carter explained that the Public
Awareness Officer is doing training in
schools, day cares and hopes to
make presentations to homeowners
associations. The officer also has
field duty to get hands on experience.
W. Cox commented that he feels it is
better to educate the teacher rather
than directing the information to the
students.

is providing the chips free because
they did not want to take business
away from the local veterinarians;
however, if the veterinarians are not
going to sell the micro chips, the
shelter might consider charging for
them.

S. Carter demonstrated the sign's
messages and told the Board that
messages will be used to promote
rabies awareness, animal adoptions,
spay/neutering and special programs
such as Adopt a Dog/Cat Month.
J. Metcalf informed the Board that

available for lease.
L. Welch suggested that a sign of this
type be displayed in the Library and
could possibly be shared.

W. Cox stated that the video should
improve customer relations.
S. Carter stated that the video camera
would protect the staff from false
accusations from citizens as well as
keep the staff on their toes.
L. Welch suggested that the tapes be
audited and used to improve staff
performance.
Paws to Recycle Award P. Burney told the Board that the
Shelter had won one of the five
awards and will be receiving a check
for $3,000.
W. Cox remarked that the Shelter has
made remarkable strides in the past
year and that 30% of animals
reclaimed is very impressive and that
the staff should be commended.
J. Metcalf stressed the importance of
public awareness regarding licensing.
P. Burney stated that information
regarding questions about licensing
will be prepared, put on a laminated
card and given to the front office of
the local veterinarians.

P. Burney stated that this would be a

regarding licensing. She noted that
the public would be receptive to the
canvasing because of the recent
rabies problems.
J. Metcalf suggested that the Boy
Scouts might become involved in
handing out fliers regarding licensing
and the upcoming canvasing.
L. Welch suggested that the council
be informed of the canvasing prior to
it being done.

Other Items P. Burney informed the Board about P. Burney - Get City
the $10.00 coupon in the Ft. Worth Attorney approval to sign
Star Telegram. With this coupon the Hold Harmless
shelter can offer $10.00 off each Agreement with Sam's
adoption. Wholesale Club.
W. Cox showed the Board a copy of a
Health Assurance Coupon that the
SPCA gives out that is good for
treatment of the animal during the first
twenty days of ownership.
J. Metcalf pointed out that since the
shelter does not have an in house
veterinarian there would be no way to
control the cost.
P. Burney stated that she had made a
plea to Sams Wholesale Club to
reconsider their decision to
discontinue donating pet food to the
Shelter. She will clear with the City
attorney the possibility of giving Sams
a Hold Harmless Agreement.

Other Items (Continued) L. Welch asked if the Shelter receives
any pet food from the Community
Enrichment Center.
S. Carter stated that the Shelter has
received pet food from them, but that
recently the center has began giving it
out themselves.
P. Burney stated that the Shelter does
receive cat litter from the center.
S. Carter informed the Council that a
new reptile store on Rufe Snow has
offered to help with the adoption
program.
W. Cox suggested contacting the
pastors of local churches to let them
know how the Shelter can help their
members.
