KEEP TEXAS BEAUTIFUL 2001
ONE MAKES A DIFFERENCE
FORT WORTH, JUNE 26-29
The City of North Richland Hills Beautification Commission
members Patsy Tucker, Chairman, Deloris Pultz, Jane Dunkel-
berg, and Tonya Littlejohn attended the 2001 Keep Texas Beau-
tiful Convention on Wednesday through Friday at the Renais-
sance Worthington Hotel in Fort Worth, June 27-29. Trans-
portation was arranged through the YMCA Medi-van system.
A hotel room was rented for two days at the personal ex-
pense of the attendees. These four commission members
wish to thank the City Council of North Richland Hills for
sending them as delegates to the Keep Texas Beautiful Con-
vention. It was an informatiYe, rewarding, entertaining
event.
The General Session with Keynote Address by Mary Scott
Nabors, former Texas Railroad and Education Commissioner,
was held on Wednesday afternoon. The theme of the week-
"the power of one" related to the importance of one indi-
vidual, one city, one school, and one organization. One
person can make a difference.
At seven o'clock Wednesday evening, a Boot Scootin' Night
at the Stockyard Station placed everyone in a Fort Worth
celebrating mood as dinner of barbecue and all "the works"
and entertainment by the Cooper Fiddlers and comedian Frank
King delighted the denim-attired crowd.
Thursday, June 28 offered a Networking Breakfast where all
could mingle and view displays from Texas contributors.
The morning included a presentation by the winners of the
Governor's Community Achievement Awards. Each city con-
trituted descriptions of their winning ways. At noon, the
O.P. Schnabel Luncheon hosted by KDFW/Fox Channel 4 anchor,
Clarice Tinsley, saw the senior citizens awards presented.
Comedian Frank King entertained during the lunch. His
clever description of seven years spent touring the United
States had the audience tearing with laughter.
Thursday afternoon offered concurrent educational sessions.
We attendees selected different topics in order to cover as
many of the sessions as possible. There were: "Landscaping
Money: How to Get More Green for Your Green" by Barrie
Cogburn. This seminar explained opportunities for communi-
ties to receive matching funds for landscape projects and
share local landscaping, success stories; "One Neighborhood
at a Time" presenterlÍ" Robin Blut, of Keep Houston Beautiful,
, showed an overview of The Mayor's Clean Neighborhood
- 2 -
Program which explained how residents are taking to the
streets and changing attitudes; also "Barking Up the
Right Tree" with expert5Þ¡ Glenda Barrett, Mike Bradshaw,
and John Giedraitis shared insights on public tree plant-
ing efforts, tree registry basics, grant and technical
assistance, and fundraising for tree planting.
After a short refreshment brea~, these sessions were held:
"Crazy About Clean Sports" where Rosie Lopez of Odessa
explained how to recruit school sports groups for clean-
ups. Sherri Callahan of Athens discussed an excellent
clean-up program, and Melissa Hoffman of Sugarland pre-
sented the successful'Litterless Little League' program.
"Organizational Gurus Share Their Secrets" presented
various ways for better organizing; "How To Get Your
Voice Heard Above the Roar" discussed media methods.
Thursday evening brought the famous convention event,
The Don't Mess With Texas Dinner. This year the theme
was "Laugh-in: Comic Relief for the Trashed-Off."
The comical segments included the latest "Don't Mess
With Texas" television commercial. Two comics related
their versions of how trash can be funny. It was.
On Friday, June 29 after a continental breakfast, the
educational sessions began at 9:30: "Local Control of
Illegal Dumping," Wild About Wildflowers," and People
to People: How to Raise Funds."
On Friday at noon the Governor's Community Achievement
Awards Luncheon where all of the winners from population
categories were honored. Veteran journalist, Sherry
Kuehl of Waco, presented the awards. The winners were:
Brownwood, Callisburg, Chandler, EIPaso, Katy, Midland,
PIano, Rowlett, and Sanger..
Among the many individual awards, our own Kathy Luppy
placed second as Teacher of the Year. She is a commission
member and teaches at North Ridge Elementary, North Richland
Hills.
The convention was an enjoyable, instructive, educational
opportunity for ideas and plans for implementing workable
programs in our city. We members appreciate the Council's
making our attendance financially possible. Next year, we
are making a positive commitment to apply and win the GCAA
for our population size. The 2002 convention will be held
in the city of origination, San Antonio. We hope to be there.
