ADOPT -A-SPOT PROGRAM REPORT
Pam Burney reported that the Richland High School Baseball team would like to change
their Adopt-A-Spot location to the area by the baseball practice fields and; that
Smithfield Middle School is looking for a different area to adopt because the area they
had adopted has been fenced off so they are unable to get to it. Pam Burney also
relayed to members that 5th grade North Ridge Elementary teacher Kathy Luppy,
requested the Beautification Commission send a letter she can put in her file,
acknowledging her classrooms' involvement in the Adopt-A-Spot program. Peggy
Weatherred made a motion that Debbie York will draft a letter to send to Kathy Luppy
and her 5th grade class, second by Delores Pultz.
Commission members also discussed having some type of an end of the year
recognition party for Adopt-A-Spot participants. A motion was made by Jane
Dunkelberg to have a separate recognition for Adopt-A-Spot volunteers, second by
Peggy Weatherred. Motion passed. Plans will be made at a later date since board
member Theresa Hampton, who is in charge of the Adopt-A-Spot program, was absent.
4.
PLANS FOR KEEP TEXAS BEAUTIFUL
CONFERENCE
Pam Burney asked members to decide which members, if any would be attending the
Keep Texas Beautiful Conference in EI Paso, so hotel and plane reservations can be
made at reduced rates. Commission members decided that Patsy Tucker will attend
and possibly Jeanne Lueck. If Jeanne Lueck is unable to attend, Peggy Weatherred will
go in her place.
5.
FALL SEMINAR SERIES PL.ANS
Commission members discussed having an educational seminar, which will be held in
the fall and came up with several different ideas. Commission members decided they
need to present information and ideas that are unlike anything else being offered in the
area. They decided the seminar should include several different topics and workshops
and came up with the following ideas:
· Herbs
· Container Gardens
· Junior Master Gardeners
· Butterflies
· Feng Shui
· Workshops geared towards kids
· Fall Trees
· Water Gardens/Ponds
A motion was made by Jane Dunkelberg to have a Fall Seminar Series, second by
Peggy Weatherred. Motion passed. Commission members will discuss plans further at
the June 6, workshop.
6.
CITIZEN INPUT
No citizen input at this time. However, Pam Burney informed commission members that
the Yard of the Month and Landscape of the Month certificates purchased last year can
no longer be used because they have the year as 19_ instead of 2000, and asked
how they would like to handle the problem since certificates will need to be handed out
at the next council meeting. Patsy Tucker recommended having more certificates
printed and changing the Landscape of the Month certificates to the same format as the
Yard of the Month certificates.
Jane Dunkleberg notified members that in October Gateway Urban Forestry Council
would be flying over 13 counties, including Tarrant, to see where trees are needed.
They will then send letters to homeowners in those areas informing them of the need for
trees and offering them special rates on trees which may be planted anywhere on their
property. Jane Dunkleberg wanted commission members to be aware of this in case
they are asked about it.
