CALL TO ORDER Ms. Pultz called the meeting to order July 19, 1994 at 7: 15 p.m. 2. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES Ms. Tucker made a motion, seconded by Ms. Scoma, to approve the minutes of the June 21 1994 Beautification Commission meeting. Motion carried 6-0. 3. NEW BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION MEMBER Ms. Pultz introduced Ms. Jeanne Lueck to the Commission. Ms. Lueck was appointed to the Beautification Commission by Councilman Garvin in June of 1994. ELECTION OF OFFICERS In accordance with the Beautification Commission By-Laws, elections of the Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson will be held at the regular business meeting in July of each year. Nominations for Chairperson were opened. Ms. Dunkelberg nominated Deloris Pultz for Chairperson, seconded by Ms. Tucker. There were no further nominations. Motion carried 5-0. Nominations for Vice-Chairperson were opened. Ms. Scoma nominated Emily Ward for Vice- Chairperson, seconded by Ms. Tucker. Motion carried 6-0. 5. STAFF REPORTS Mr. Hightshoe updated the Commission on the Clean Campus Award signs. The signs are ready and under the stairwell at the Recreation center. Mr. Hightshoe will bring one to the next meeting. Mr. Hightshoe handed out the Trophy Tree Program folders to the Commission members. Mrs. Sommermeyer commented that since a tree in her neighborhood was nominated the yard looks neater and better. Larry Schaapveld from the Texas Forest Services was in our area and checked on our Christmas Tree and reported that it is doing fine. Ms. Scoma commented that all the trees are doing real good all throughout the City. Ms. Scoma wondered if the trees were from our tree farm. Mr. Hightshoe explained that the trees on Watauga Road and Harwood Road were from a Small Business Administration Grant and are hand watered on a regular basis. 6. DISCUSSION OF OTHER ITEMS/CITIZEN INPUT Ms. Pultz updated the Commission on the Christmas Decorations. Citizens of North Richland Hills contacted members of the City _Council requesting more decorations and more Christmas lights. Due to this fact City Council has decided to purchase Christmas Decorations from Jim Ewing, a resident of North Richland Hills. Mr. Ewing makes large lawn decorations with lights. The city will purchase a sleigh, horse, trees and twelve extra trees. The cost will be $4,100. Ms. Scoma would like it khown that the Beautification Commission did not want to go in the direction of the banners, but did so because the Commission was influenced to go in that direction. Electricity is not available on the medians on Watauga Road, so Christmas lights Beautification Commission Minutes July 19, 1994 2 could not be placed there without a great expense. Ms. Lopez will contact City Administration concerning the Keep Texas Beautiful awards presentation, at the August 8 City Council meeting, and will also send out invitations to the award winners inviting them to attend the Council meeting. Ms. Dunkelberg has been appointed to the Illegal Dumping Group which will meet quarterly. The ReDirectory Program had a very good turnout. Mr. Hightshoe will check in to graphics for the Bilingual Signs, and order those as soon as possible. Ms. Dunkelberg updated the Commission on the Adopt-A-Highway program. The Phi Theta Capa Sorority will adopt the highway by T.C.J.C. for two years. The Adopt-A-Highway application will be sent in soon. Ms. Tucker will also contact Mr. Hoppe to verify which area he has adopted in the Adopt-A-Spot Program. Ms. Pultz encouraged everyone to read their FYI reports. The Commission decided their would not be a workshop on August 1, 1994. The Commission presented Ms. Dunkelberg with a cake to honor her for her achievements with Keep Texas Beautiful and for being presented the O. P. Schnabel Status Citizen Award. 7.
