CALL TO ORDER Ms. Pultz called the meeting to order December 14, 1993 at 7:03 PM. 2. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES Ms. Scoma made a motion, seconded by Ms. Ward, to approve the minutes of the November 9, 1993 Beautification Commission meeting. Motion carried 5-0. 3. VOLUNTEER BANQUET Ms. Scoma began discussion on the plans for the Volunteer Banquet. Ms. Sommermeyer made a motion, seconded by Ms. Dunkelberg, that the Volunteer Banquet be held on March 17, 1994, with a St. Patrick's Day theme, at 7PM in the Assembly Room at the Recreation Center. Motion carried 5-0. 4. TEXAS 2000 AWARD ENTRY Ms. Dunkelberg explained the application for Texas 2000 Award by Keep Texas Beautiful involving "water monitoring" and "Christmas tree recycling". Ms. Scoma made a motion, seconded by Ms. Ward, to submit the Texas 2000 Award application. Motion carried 5-0. Beautification Commission Minutes December 14, 1993 1 5. GREAT TEXAS TRASH OFF AND BAG-A-THON FLYER Ms. Dunkelberg explained the attached flyer should be reviewed for changes/deletions ~ follows: Date/Time - April 9, 1994 from 9AM - 3PM. The Beautification Commission emblem will be used. Registration deadline will remain March 18, 1993. Ms. Ward made a motion, seconded by Ms. Tucker, to accept the changes to the flyer with the emblem. Further discussion was held. Ms. Ward made a motion to amend the first motion for Ms. Dunkelberg to meet with staff on the flyer with the changes ahd using the most appropriate Commission emblem for the flyer. Amended motion carried 5-0. 6. GREAT TEXAS TRASH OFF AND BAG-A- THON CITY NEWSLETTER ARTICLE Ms. Dunkelberg passed out a proposed news article to be placed in the NRH Quarterly Newsletter asking citizens to participate in the Great Texas Trash Off and Bag-A- Thon. Discussion was held on the various changes to the newsletter. Ms. Dunkelberg made a motion, seconded by Ms. Ward, to accept the article and to follow the necessary procedures to submit this article the editor of the NRH Quarterly Newsletter. Motion was carried 5-0. 7. GREAT TEXAS TRASH OFF AND BAG-A- THON LETTER TO YOUTH GROUPS Ms. Dunkelberg requested a review of the letter to be mailed to youth groups in the City of North Richland Hills inviting them to participate in the Great Texas Trash Off and Bag-A- Thon. Further discussion was held on the letter and t-shirts. Ms. Dunkelberg made a motion, seconded by Ms. Ward, to made changes to the letter and send to the youth groups. Motion carried 5-0. Ms. Dunkelberg made a motion, seconded by Ms. Tucker, to pursue the matter of having t-shirts printed for this event. Motion carried 5-0. 8. CLEANUP OF CAMP MCCLURE Ms. Dunkelberg would like the Commission to cooperate with the Camp Fire Girls and Boys in February in the cleanup of Camp McClure. Discussion was held. Ms. Scoma made a motion, seconded by Ms. Ward, that the Beautification Commission officially support the 1993 Cleanup of Camp McClure with Camp Fire Girls and Boys in their annual event. Motion carried 5-0. Beautification Commission Minutes December 14, 1993 2 9. NEET WORKSHOP WITH TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION ADOPT A HIGHWAY COORDINATOR Ms. Dunkelberg requested that the Commission cooperate with NEET in a workshop with the Texas Department of Transportation Adopt A Highway Coordinator. Discussion was held. Ms. Dunkelberg made a motion, seconded by Ms. Sommermeyer, to support and attend the workshop when a date has been set. Motion carried 5-0. 10. TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION VEGETATION MANAGEMENT PROGRAM Ms. Dunkelberg proposed that the Commission participate in the Texas Department of Transportation Vegetation Management Program. This is a program stressing the use of native plants and not using week killers and a lot of fertilizers so as not to harm our environment. Ms. Dunkelberg would like the authority to work with the Texas Department of Transportation on the program. Ms. Dunkelberg also explained that she would meet with Mr. Elliott and Ms. Greenwood (of Texas D.O.T.) to gather information in order to advise the Commission on this program. Ms. Tucker made a motion, seconded by Ms. Scoma, to allow Ms. Dunkelberg to participate in the program and inform the Commission of native plants on state highways. Motion carried 5-0. 11. DISCUSSION OF OTHER ITEMS . Mr. Hightshoe gave the following report: The banners on Rufe Snow and Watauga Road will be repaired by either staff or company that installed them. There has been a delay due to high winds. The cost to repair the banners by the company will be $10 each. Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony was very successful. All feedback has been positive. . It was noted that day care centers were very appreciative of the posters announcing the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. Ms. Pultz took this opportunity to compliment Tim and his staff for the great work that was done for the ceremony. Also each of the commission members were thanked for their part in the ceremony. · Ms. Ward and Ms. Dunkelberg were recently recognized for their work with the Master Gardeners. Beautification Commission Minutes December 14, 1993 3 · Ms. Dunkelberg stated that the Trophy Tree taping, a 30 minute program, was complete. At the next commission meeting the tapes will be viewed. ADJOURNMENT Ms. Dunkelberg made a motion, seconded by Ms. Ward, to adjourn the regular meeting at 8:04PM. A workshop followed this meeting. ~~ 7W1z?
