CALL TO ORDER Mr. Leslie called the meeting to order May 7, 2001 at 6:05 p.m. ITEM 2. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES APPROVED MOTION: Mr. Turnage made a motion, seconded by Mr. Haynes, to approve the minutes of the April 2, 2001 meeting. Motion carried 4-0. ITEM 3. RECREATION, ATHLETICS, SENIOR ADULTS, TEENS, TENNIS CENTER AND CULTURAL ARTS PROGRAM REPORTS Ms. Loftice updated the Park and Recreation Board on the following: Spring Break Camp was held April 9-13 with 26 campers. The week was full of activities with trips to the Fort Worth Nature Center and skating. Youth dance classes will perform at Mayfest on May 4th at 5:00 p.m. and the Spring Dance Recital is scheduled for May 19~' at the Shannon Auditorium. Carolyn Riehl will coordinate 130 dance students at both of these events. Wristbands have been implemented for free-play basketball at the Recreation Center to manage the number of players using the facility without paying. Ms. Loftice thanked Mr. John Ramsey for protecting and escorting the Bunny at the Easter In The Park event. Mr. Ramsey's daughter also blew the whistle to start the hunt. North Hills Corporate Challenge kicked off on April 28th with the tug-of-war event. One hundred and eighty participants gathered at Northfield Park to begin the two-week competition, which includes 14 companies competing in 12 events culminating in the survivor challenge on May 12tn Summer softball registration is underway through June 11tn Spring volleyball leagues began with 24 teams playing two nights a week. The Bursey Senior Center participated in a pantry shower where all the seniors brought in their favorite snacks to share with others during the month. Bursey Senior Center started a new evening program called Stepping Out. Each month a group of seniors goes out for the evening, in April they went to Judge Roy Beans. Bursey Center also held their 2"d annual Mother's Day Breakfast on May 14th and a fashion show was held on May 17th with senior center participants modeling clothes from the Bug Barn in Watauga. Dan Echols Seniors took a trip to Memphis and Tunica, Tennessee on April 16th. The group had a wonderFul time and took in many of the tourist attractions; riverboat rides, downtown tours, the casinos and a tour of Graceland. The Swinging Seniors performed three times this month and the Singers entertained twice. Sixty-eight people enjoyed the covered dish luncheon at Dan Echols and were entertained by Bryan and Teresa Wurster from the First Baptist Church. Park and Recreation Board Minutes May 7, 2001 2 Dan Echols Senior Center is planning a 100t" Birthday Celebration for one of their participants. "Chalk It Up", a national sidewalk chalk art event will be held on May 19th in various neighborhoods throughout the City. Five associations have committed to participate. The theme is "Celebration of Spring in North Richland Hills parks". The artwork will be judged and the winning association will be presented a$100 Sam's gift certificate. Attendance for A Lotta Night Music Spring Concert Series continues to grow. The "Light Crust Doughboys", a Texas swing band with two Grammy Awards will perform on May 11th and "Me & My Monkey", a Beatles Tribute Band will perform on May 25~'. Twenty-four participants from `the edge' enjoyed a night with the Dallas Mavericks and even got to watch the Mavericks warm up and get autographs. The last Friday Night Out Dance was held on April 27th. There will be six dances scheduled for the 2001-2002 school year. 'the edge' participants are planning their "end of year" blow out parties. Each site will have a different party atmosphere as they tailor the party to their school. Richland Tennis Center had a great month for revenues. In April they realized $31,585 compared to April of 2000 which was $18,189. ITEM 4. PARK OPERATIONS AND CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM STATUS REPORT Mr. Thornton updated the Park and Recreation Board on the following: The District Office of TxDOT has sent the final plans to Austin for final approval for the Cottonbelt Trail. The City Entryway Sign project is progressing. Autografic has set May 31, 2001 as the completion date. All but two of the Standard Park Signs have been installed and will be installed by May 10, 2001. Staff is putting the final touches on the presentation to City Council for the City Image Study. ITEM 5. AQUATIC REPORT Mr. Chris Swartz updated the Park and Recreation Board on the following: Construction is winding down on the Purplepalooza, which will be ready to go on opening day. Park and Recreation Board Minutes May 7, 2001 3 The new computer system is working great. The vendor has been very receptive to addressing any issues. NRH2O staff has hired and is completing training of approximately 275 team members for this season. Opening Day is May 19~'. Season pass sales are ahead of last year. ITEM 6. OTHER INFORMATIONAL ITEMS Mr. Turnage asked about the scoreboards at Richfield Park that are not working. Staff will check with Gary and see what the problem is. Mr. Leslie requested, on behalf of John Pena, an ethnic breakdown of the management team at NRH2O. Mr. Leslie thanked all the Park & Recreation Board members who showed up at the Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies. He also thanked staff for doing a great job with only four days notice. ITEM 7.
