Dave Petika, Director of Parks & Recreation Jack Giacomarro, Parks Superintendent Jim Browne, Recreation Superintendent Daniel Munoz, RYA Vice President Jackie Scruggs, Football Commissioner Mary Ann Gibson, NRH Senior Center MEETSNG CALLED TO ORDER: Don Tipps, Vice Chairman at 6:37 PM. ~ APPP.OVAL OF THE MINUTES: Motion was made by Mr. Parkey to approve and accept as submitted the minutes of the ,Tan. 5, 1988 Board Meetinq. Motion was seconded by Mr. Fenimore. Vote was unanimous in favor of acceptance of the minutes by those in attendance at the Janu~?ry 5, 1988 Board l~eeting. NEW BUSINESS . ITEM 1: PARKS DZVISION UPDATE Mr. Giacomarro qave the following report: Fossil Creek Park: Paint and repair work are in progress. One af t e igY~t ~=s was knocked over by high winds. The parking lot has been patched, it will not be repaved this year. The new restroom is progressing well. ~ ~ ~ Norich Park: Paint and repair work are in progress. The asp a t wal~ is bEing removed. The walk will be filled with top soil and grass. F.ichfield Park: Paint and repair work are in progress. Northfield Park: Paint and repair work are in progress. A~-o~ ~ie~ds are now ready for rental in anticipation of spring softball play. Discussion: Mr. Fenimore asked Mr. Giacomarro if he had inspected the other lights at Fossil Creek Park. Mr. Giacomarro said he had, and most of them need repair. ITEM 2: RECREATION/ATHLETIC UPDATE: Mr. Browr~e gave the following report: A. Class enrollment figures are very high this time. Total revenue from the classes is $5,354.OQ the highest ever. Some classes have reached their limits while others had to be expanded. Mr. Browne commended Monica Walsh, Gina Gonzalez, and the recreation staff attendants for their hard work. B. New signs have been put up throughout the facility. C. New hours Mo~ld~y-Thursday 8:00 AM till 10:00 PM Friday 8:00 AM till 6:00 PM Saturday 9:00 AM till 5:00 PM Sunday 12:30 PM till 4:30 PM D. Rentals are baoming. We had 10 rentals all ready scheduled for February, plus several pending. We have 8 groups that meet on a monthly basis: Defensive driving, Commodore Computer Club, Astrology Club, Speech Club. Those that meet twice a month are: Texas Winqs Radio Control Flying Club, RYA. There are two groups that meet every other month or special meeting; American Meteoroloqical Society and NEFAL. E. The Humane Saciety is hosting a Cat Show March 19 in the Dance Room. F. ID System is in effect, it beqan January 18th. over 500 SDs have been issued in the first two weeks. 429 individual membership of residents, 39 non-resident individual mEmberships, 9 NRH family memberships and 120 visitors ; . ~ G. Parks Department built an aerobic stand for the i~structors which has made the class arrang~ment m~ch better. We l~ave recei~ed numbers of compliments on the stand and we appreciate the employees for making it. H. The North Richland Hills Park and Recreation Department will sponsor an Easter Egg Hunt on April 2nd at one of the parks. We will be seekinq volunteers and contributions for the event for ages 1-10. Candy eggs and prize eggs will be given away. I. We now have an alarm system on the east door in the gymnasium special thanks to Mr. Ron Parks for installing it. J. NRH will host North Texas Recreation Society meeting in April and just recently hoste~ the TAAF Regional Meeting with 20 cities being represented. We also requested and received a bid to host the TAAF Region IV Girls Minor, Juni~r and Senior Fast Pitch Tournaments on behalf of the NRGSA. K. Important dates to remember: Feb 9-11 American Airlines National Basketball Tournament at the Recreatfan Center. 12-14 teams from across the nation in a double sliminatian tournament. We are helping out by providing and scheduling officials. _ Feb. 15 Start umpire schoal for softball. Feb. 16 City playoffs for basketball, the overall champion will go to the regional taurnament in Arlington. £eb. 22 Start spring softball registration for resident and returning tea~s. Feb. 29 apen registratian for softball. Mar. 8 Fees: $325.00 for 14 games $300.00 for 12 games Mar 5 r3RH-AOA Pre season softball tournament. $100.00 entry fee. Mar. 14 Start softball leaques. Mar. 26 TAAF Reqional Co-Rec Volleyball Tournament at Rec Center . April 15-17 TAAF State Co-Rec Volleyball Tournament , . . Master Pl~n Survey: copies have been supplied ta al]. Board members. We would appreciate your camments and input prior to distribution of this survey. ITEM 3: REPORTS A. North Richland Girls Softball Association The Cl~air asked for a representative from the NRGSR. There was not a representative present. B. NRH Senior Citizens CenLer The Chair asked for a representative from NRH Senior Center. Mary Ann Gibson gavE the following report: In January activities included a field trip to the Omni Theater, a nutrition proqram, birthday party, fire drill, and movie with popcorn. Breakfast was served and 22 people attended, it was such a success it will be repeated twice a month. In February the exerci~e qroup will go to a nursing home and demonstrate their exercise routine. Also volunteers-will stuff envelopes for Easter Seals. United Way will film an interview with one of the participants and also film the exercise group. There will also be a VaZentine Party and Leap Year pot luck lunch. ~ Discussion: Mr. Parks asked if the upstairs is available for use yet. Mrs. Gibsvn said it has been cleared some. Mr. Petika asked if the participants at this Center would be interested in helpinq if another Center was apened in town. Mrs. Gibson said that they would be glad to help. C. Richland Youth Association The Chair asked for a representative from RYA. Daniel Munoz said that there will be an RYA monthly m~+~ting tomorrow at 7:30 PM in the Recreation Center. Mr. Muno2 was told that the funding for coaches certification was turned down. Mr. Fenimore asked if RYA was ready for the plywood and when they were planning a work day. Mr. Munoz stated tha~t all of that would be decided at the meeting. Mr. Parkey told Mr. Munoz that all youth organizations would be required to certify coaches, nat ~ust RYA. Mr. Munoz asked Mr. Browne the actual cost per cosch. Mr. Browne told him it would be $15.00 per coach. Mr. Parkey reminded them that only the official caach is required to have certification. ~ i , ~ ~ ti ITEM 4: ~ISCUSSION 4F OTHER ITEMS The Chair asked for further discussion. Mr. Petika told the Board tlzat they would be seeinq a new agenda next month. Items for the agenda must be submitted 10 days prior to the meeting, and if an item is not on the agenda it can not be voted on. Mr. Petika added that Mr. Browne had been very diligent in the preparatian of the survey, Ms. Battles asked how the survey would be distributed. Mr. Petika said that a percentage of the water customers would recelve the surveys. ADJOURNMENT: Mr. Fenimore made a motion to adjourn. Ms. Battles seconded the motion.
