SEPTEMBER 20, 1990
The North Richland Hills Library Board met in the board room of the library on September 20,
at 7 p.m. Present were Polly Brinkley, Jan Daniels, Jay Bradshaw, Brenda Cody, Clyde
Zellers, Alisa Wood, Kay Schmidt, Arlita Hallam, and Brenda Lewis. Absent: Shirley Goolsby.
Chairman Jan Daniels called tha meeting to order. Polly BrinkZey moved, Jay Bradshaw .
seconded, the motion carried to approve the April 26 minutes as written.
Jan introduced new board member Brenda Cody, a BISD elamentary school librarian. Retiring
member Roxie Hamilton recom~aended Brenda to Councilman Frank Metts as her replacement
in Place 4. ,
Jan suggested that election of officers and the North Texas Library System lay represent-
ative be the next agenda item. Clyde Zellers nominated Jan Daniels as Chairman; Alisa
Wood seconded the nomination. Alisa Wood nominated Kay Schmidt as Vice-Chairman; Clyde
Zellers seconded. Jan Daniels was elected as Chairman for 1990/91 and Kay Schmidt as
Vice-Chairman by acclamation. Clyde Zellers nominated Alisa Wood as Lay Representative
to the North Texas Library System for 1990/92; Brenda Cody seconded the nomination, and
the motion carried. All other board meanbers will serve as alternate lay delegates.
Library Director Arlita Hallam's report included the following:
The linguistics collection catalogs of 1,633 items with bidding information have been
mailed to 140 national and international colleges, universities, and private companies.
The bids will be opened on Octaber 1.
The anonymous contributor has set October 1 as the date to expect the first installment
on a donation for library materials.
Mignon Morse will join our staff as Assistant Director of Public Services on October 1.
Mi~non has her Master's De~ree from the University of Mississippi. She is currently
head librarian of the Barksdale Air Force Base Library and is experienced
in rare book collections, genealogy, and local history.
The first North Texas ~onference on Library and Informatian Services at Wichita Falls
on September 8 was very successful. Among the discussed issues, participants resolved
to work for statewide library cards and productivity through literacy in the workplace.
The next conference is Saturday, September 22, in Weatherford.
Chairman Jan Daniels attended a gathering with Congressman Pete Geren. She shared with
him the draft resolutions from the Wichits Falls conference. He expressed interest in
the education and workforce productivity goals of the group and may arrange his schedule
to attend the conference in Denton on October 13.
Arlita discussed the gossibility of linking our sutomated Iibrary system to Fort Worth,
Arlington, Euless, Haltom City, and Keller libraries through tha Dynix system. She and
Betty Russell are now exploring costs, use of existing IBM ha~dware, barcoding needs,
and other feasibilities for linlcing to the Dynix system. When completed, NRFi residents
could use their library cards at the other libraries without non-resident fees.
Kay Schmidt reported that the early sum~aer library book shvwer sponsored by the Friends
of the Library generated $1,200 of donated books for our collection.
CZyde Zellers moved, Alisa Wood seconded, and the motion carried to honor retiring board
member Roxie Hamilton for her outstanding service to the library during her years on the
board. A dinner was tentatively scheduled for October 18. Arlita and Jan will coordinate
the plans.
The next regular meeting was scheduled for 7 p.m. on Octob~r 18 at the Steak and Ale
Restaurant following dinrier at 6 p.m. honoring Roxie Hamilton.
Clyde Zellers moved, Alisa Wood seconded, and the motion carried to adjourn at 7:50 p.m.
