~ March 29, 1989
,
The March 29 meeting of the North Richland Hills Library Board was
held in the board room of the library at 3:30 p.m. Present were Polly
Brinkley, Jan Daniels, Janice Fenimore, Clyde Zellers, Kay Schmidt,
Alisa Wood, Mike FritZ, ArZita Hallam, and Brenda Lewis. Roxie Hamilton
was absent.
Chairman Kay Schmidt called the meeting to order; the minutes of the
February 22 meeting were approved as written. ~
Kay Schmidt reported that the City Council approved a 40-hour temporary
children's librarian position for the summer. BISD school librarians
Brenda Cody and Sylvia Ritchie will share the temporary position.
ArZita Hallam reported that Audio-Visual Coordinator Judy McCoy has
resigned to accept a position with the Fort Worth Public Library.
In the past four years, twelve professional librarians have resigned
to accept professional positions at a higher salary elsewhere.
The library staff is working with the NRH Police Department on the
problem of a man identifying himself as "Jim Harrison or Jim Larson
of the NRHPL" calling parents of school children informing them that
their child has an overdue library book. A notation on the March
water bill will alert residents to this hoax and request that they
phone the police if contacted by this person.
~ Arlita Hallam invitad Board members to accompany her to the April 27
NTLS semi-annual meeting in Olney.
Kay reported that the workshop she attended recently on long-range
planning was very informative. Although the program was keyed to
smaller libraries, the information will be helpful in NRHPL's 1989/94
planning process.
~ Following discussion of the City goals for 1989/90 and the library
goals and objectives for 1989/94, the consensus was that the library
should concentrate on raising the books per capita from 1.45 to 2
and additional personnel. The NRIiPL has the highest circulation rate
per book per year in the state of Texas.
Following discussion on ways to inform the citizens of library services
and library needs, Kay Schmidt will contact Mike Brinkley, President
of the Friends of the Library, to propose a joint meeting of the Board
and the Friends for a planning session.
Clyde Zellers moved, Janice Fenimore seconded, motion carried to commend
Vice Chairman Jan Daniels for her March 13 presentation to the City
Council requesting that the children's librarian position be reinstated.
The next meeting was scheduled for April 26, 1989.
This meeting adjourned at 5:15 p.m.
