HomeMy WebLinkAboutLIB 1987-10-28 Minutes LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES October 28. 1987 The North Richland Hills Library Board met October 28, at 3:30 p.m. in the board roam. Present were Polly Brinkley, Jan Daniels, Mickey Oxford, Mattie Belle Lewis, Kay Schmidt, Mike Fritz, Roxy Hamilton, Arlita Hallam, and Brenda Lewis. Absent: Clyde Zellers. Vice-Chairman Mickey Oxford called the meeting to order as the chairman was to be late. The minutes of the September 23 meeting were approved , as written. Library Director ArZita Hallam reported that the Grand Opening Celebra- tion was a big success. An estimated 2,500-3,000 people joined in the day-long festivities. Public response to the new facility has been tremendous. Arlita reviewed the 1987 Annual Report (included in current mailing) with members. On October 24, Arlita met with the newly-formed NTLS regional group which is to provide improved communication channels from member libraries to the system. In response to an inquiry from Mickey Oxford at the September meeting, Arlita said that the $2.50 fee for each overdue notice following ~ the first courtesy notice will be noted on the courtesy notice that is mailed to patrons. Following extensive discussion on the recently-adopted policies for city suditoriwn use, the consensus was for each board member to contact their corresponding city council member to discuss this policy and gather more information. Kay Schmidt reported that she and Arlita presented the suggestion of naming the entrance section from Rufe Snow Road "Library Lane" to the Council. The recommendation was not approved. Kay asked members to be thinking about long-range planning for the Library. According to Arlita, all the goals of the 1983 five-year plan have been reached. She suggested that the Bosrd work on a new five-year plan with updates each year. Arlita cited the section af the Library Board Bylaws pertaining to attendance. Kay asked all members to be aware of attendance rules. Kay complimented Arlita, as Chairman of the Texas Library Association District 7, on the successful district meeting held in the library October 23 and 24. Over 155 librarians and guests attended workshops, enjoyed meals, and toured our new facilities. Kay was especially pleased with Dr. Jean Greenlaw's workshop on teaching reference ~ skills to students. She hopes to contact Dr. Greenlaw about sharing her method with NRH students, perhaps on videotape. The next meeting was scheduled for January 27, 1988. Brenda Lewis
