. North Richland Hills Il,ibrary Commission
August 23, 1978
Meeting was called to order by Mrs. Brinkley and a ro~l call of inembers
was made. Minutes of the last meeting were approved as read.
Mrs. Prewitt presented the board a proposal concerning a project approved
by Texas State Libre~ry. The Captain Kangaroo TV program, beginning
October 2, 1978, will have a 5-minute segment devoted to activities
presented in "Picturepag~s."' This newspaper like booklet is for sale
to libraries for distribution throughout the 20 week program. Not all
libraries in the area have received this packet yet, nor has system
funding been okayed. Mrs. Prewitt requested that the board consider
buying out of the October book sale funds enough Picturepages for
50 children with the idea that if more would be necessary they could
be ordered. ~i discussion was held with ~mbers agreeing the program
would be good publicity for the library. Mr. Baker said a concensus
of what libraries arould be participating would be good to have to determine
if buying for 50 wauld be enough. Dr. Ellis, suggested that library card
holders be given first priority in receiving them. Mr. Davis moved
that Mrs. Prewitt purchase enough Picturepages for f8 children for
20 weeks (545.00), seconded by Mrs. Daniels. The motion was approved.
Mrs. Brinkley gave a repc~rt on the Trustee Workshop held at the Ft. Worth
Public Library August 9th. She outlined the program that gave information
on the duties of the board, organizing Friends of the Library groups,
suggestions for promoting library services, and a charge to board members
to give library new~ at all civic meetinqs that they attend.
A discussion was held on the proposed book sale to be held by the unofficial
~riends of the Library group. Mrs. Prewitt r~ported that it would be
the first week in September before the Northeast Mall would g~~t+~Y$heir
okay for tt?e sale to be~held there. Mrs. Prewitt asked if the Friends
group wanted to contact Hoy Scouts to hand out flyers announcing a
book drive for the sale, and the Board felt this should be done.
Tentative date for the sale would be Oct. Sth and 6th; volunteers to
sort the books have been obtained. Dr. Ellis requested that good
children's baoks b~ set aside to be bought by a group wishing to
replace school books lost in a flood at a small town in west Texas.
Mrs. Prewitt asked the board to conside~ advising that the library
askr~for a deposit of the cost of the book when G.E.D. and Armed
Forees test books are checked out. This was requested as the loss
rate on these books has risen so high that the library cannot keep
copies. Dr. Ellis made the motion, seconded, approved by all
members of the board.
Mr. Baker inquired about using the back of the water bills to publicize
library activities, and a di~cussion was held cbncerning this.
