October 24, 1979
The meeting was called to order by president, Mrs. Charles Brinkley.
Members present were: Mrs. Brinkley, Mr. S. J. Baker, Mr. J. Fred
Davis, and Mrs. Mattie Belle Lewis. Members absent: Mrs. M. T.
Daniels, Dr. Ron Smotherman, and Dr. Norman Ellis.
Minutes of the last meeting were read; Mr. Baker moved that they
be approved as read, motion seconded by Mrs. Lewis; board approved.
A7r. Baker asked if an answer had been received on the library using
copy machine profits to buy supplies. Mrs. Prewitt replied that
the only answer to date had been the initial one that the Council
did not approve that.
Mrs. Prewitt reported that the library had been in touch with several
people about holc_'ing GED (studj_es for high school equivalency diploma
tests) classes in the library. Because of difficulties at the education
office classes will not be held this year. It is hoped that next year
the education office will consider the library and budget for classes.
In addition to GED classes, Mrs. Prewitt said that she had hopes of
also includ~ing classes to teach reading. Mrs. Prewitt reported that
she had attended a workshop at Garland Public Library on literacy
classes that had been very informative in trying to set up this type
of program.
Mrs. Prewitt announced that the kindergarten classes at Holiday Heights
had visited the library on +D~#~b~~~~~:18th and 19th. The class had sent
a thank you note and pictures drawn by the children. She asked the
board to look at them before they left as they were displayed around
the circulation desk.
Mrs. Prewitt announced that the annual statistics in brief form had
been presented in the packet of information to the board at the meeting
and that a complete report in de~ail would be presented at the time
of the Annual Report to the Texas State Library.
Mrs. Brinkley announced that the book sale at the mall had been a great
success. The help of the volunteers had been greatly appreciated. The
total profit from the sale was $756.49. A discussion was held on fo~ming
a friends of the library group to hold the book sale next year. Mrs.
Prewitt said an organizational meeting was to be held Oct. 25~Tnc~ It
was recommended that it the group could be formed that they be in charge
of dividing the books out by category to make selling the books easier
at the next sale.
Mrs. Prewitt announced that the next atem on the agenda, automation in
the library, was still one she would like to ~ee the board study, with
Dr. Ellis making recommendations. She reported that Texas State Library
and the Texas Historical Commission would be having a meeting in Austin
on November 9th that should also include plans for future automation
projects for the state, and that other librarians hoped to bring this up
at that meeting.
