The following memhers were present: Polly Brinkley Jan Daniels J. Fred Davis Marie Hinkle Tiffany Nourse Lynn O'Day Ron Smotherman Jim Tucker Absent: Mattie Belle Lewis Marie Hinkle is the new liaison to the Commission for the City Council. The minutes of the March 24, 1982 meeting were approved as submitted. Update of Director's Report: Mrs. Nourse praised the church staff at the North Richland Hills Church of Christ and the Christian Temple School personnel who helped her during the emergency created when a propane gaspipe was _ cut at Booth Calloway and Glenview Drive on April 16. She explained that the function of the library is to provide shelter, food and/or clothing to cit~l~ns who are in need during an emergency. This was the first opport~~~~ for the City to test its Emergency Operations , Plan. • F'. Tiffany reported that on Thursday, April 22, 1982 at 11:00 a.m. the ~ library had a reception honoring all the volunteers (Nati~nal V olUnteer Week~. City Manager Rodger Line was present and complia?ented the volunteers on their hard work. Certificates of Appreciation were presented to four volunteers who have given 100 or more hours of service to the library. The Children's Librarian will be visiting different schools in North Richland Hills between May 3-14 to inform the children of the Summer Reading Club that will begin in the library on June 2 and will last for nine weeks. The Director asked for comments from the Hoard. Polly Brinkley stated that ~he young mothers in hez corranunity seem pleased with the present services that the library is offering. It was re- r~orted that two staff inembers from the Parenting Guidance Center will visit the libr~ry~ during the Summer Reading Club hours and give suggestions to mothers on how to entertain youngsters durir~ the long, hot sumaer. NORTH RICHLAND HILIS LIBRARY COMMISSION ' - April 28, 1982 P•2 i Old Business: The Friends of the NRH Library met on Thursday, April 22 at 9:30 a.m. It was decided that there will be an annual Book Sale in October. ! Because of the low membership, a future Book Discussion Group will be ; a library function rather than a Friends function. Ron Smotherman suggested that the Board try to find some member willing to become the new chairperson of the Friends since Mrs. Thompson's term has expired. New Business: It was reported that a Trinity Arts Foundation Purchase Award will be presented to the NRH Public Library by its donor, North Hills Mall, Philip E. McConnell, Manager, on Monday, May 10 at 12:30 p.m. It is a mixed-media painting titled The Emblem Maker by artist Gere Leeds. The Library Director and several City Officials will be present for the presentation. Tiffany presented and explained the 1982-83 Budget Request to the Board members. A discussion of the Library & Park Etind being used to augment a normal book budget amount followed. The 1982-83 book ~ budget has been more than doubled. This will start the City on a program of providing average City support, freeing the Library & ` Park Fund contributions for extra "above and beyond" support.
