January 23, 1985
Chairman Bob Courser brought the North Richland Hills Library Board ~eeting
to order on Wednesday, January 23, 1985. The minutes of November 28 were
approved as submitted.
Tiffany reported that the tape, containing the bibliographic record of our
materials (35,500 items), has been received from Autio Graphics. After it
has been inserted into our City's computer, new labels for these items will
be printed. The library will be ready to close on February 4 for the
relabeling of library ma.terials. Board members were asked to volunteer any
time they could spare on the projecC.
Mrs. Nourse commended Children's Librarian Christiann Dykstra for her enthu-
siasm and excellent rapport with children and reported on several of Christiann's
latest programs.
It was also reported that a new parcel of approximately 20 acres on Watauga Road
is currently in the process of being acquired by the City for a future library,
recreation center, utility storage and animal control center.
The Literacy Program has begun at the North Richland Hills Public Library.
Tutors are ready to help the students wishing to prepare for the GED exam
and/or needing to improve their reading, math, or other skills.
Bob Courser reviewed a Resolution for City Council stating the Board's concern
about the use of Meeting Room 100 by the public due to the expensive Citicable
36 equipment stored th~re. A letter of support was read from the North Richland
Hills Cable Television Soard which will accompany the ResoluCion. The members
present at the meeting signed the Resolution.
It was reported that the County is going to eliminate the traditional funding of
libraries in Tarrant County. The North Richland Hi11s portion has previously
been added to the General Fund to offset the cost of library postage, utilities
and maintenance. To offset the loss of these funds, a user's fee is being
considered by several cities in the area. Already Hurst has approved a User's
Fee which will require non-residents to pay twenty-five cents (25C) per item checked
out. The North Richland Hills Library Board members discussed the subject
and decided to study the situation for a while longer. They felt a user's fee
is not consistent with the current library mission.
The next meeting of the Library Board will be on Wednesday, February 27, 1985.
Polly Brinkley moved to adjourn Che meeting at 5:00 p.m.; seconded by Mattie
Belle Lewis.
