Teen Court Advisory Board Meeting
Monday July 30, 2007
I. Call Meeting to order- Meeting called to order at 6:31 pm by Ron Moore
(temporary chairperson). In attendance were Ron Moore, Danny Perkins, Karen
Russell, Eric Trainer and Janet Golightly.
II. Officer elections- Discussed open Chairman Position and length of term. Janet
was voted in as chairperson of the board (Danny nominated with Karen
seconding). It was decided that we would renew the position annually.
III. Review Recruitment process- Discussion about ways to get more volunteer teens
involved since 5 of our attorneys recently graduated and were no longer part of
the program. It was decided that we would focus on getting the message out to
the local schools. Rebecca will gather information on the following and let the
board know how we can help her:
a. Talk to Birdville/Richland High Criminal Justice teacher Mr. Hernandez
about getting his students involved and possibly offering extra credit.
b. Talk to coordinator of Birdville/Richland High debate team about getting
their participation.
c. Talk to teacher of Birdville/Richland High government classes about
getting their participation
d. Talk to coordinator of Birdville/Richland High National Honor Society
about getting their participation. Those students need community service
hours and this would be a good way to get those.
e. Get information out to the students of Birdville/Richland High by
participating in their open house. Birdville August 17th and Richland
August 21 S` (check those dates)
f. Attend Birdville/Richland PTA meeting which may include parent/teacher
night
g. Get information published in the NRH city newsletter
h. Get information published on NRH city cable
i. Get information published in handout in NRH city water bill
j. Get Parks & Rec marketing person to assist with marketing flier
k. During Teen Court sessions it was decided that:
i. We would get information (flier) to hand to those kids who we
think would make great attorneys.
ii. We would be creative in helping kids who would make good
attorneys by being flexible about community service hours so they
may get court experience.
iii. Come up with a survey card that we would keep on file for all
teens - a questionnaire about what they learned, what helped, and
in general comments about the teen court program.
1. Rebecca will call or email the board members if she needs help with any
or all of the above.
IV. New business- Discussion about dropped scholarship issue. Will add to next
agenda to make final decisions about scholarship award criteria and funding. Also
will discuss getting local law businesses to donate scholarship money.
