Mayor Oscar Trevino welcomed committee members and addressed the role of the Economic Development Committee and thanked everyone for their participation in assisting the City. John Pitstick asked each individual member to give a brief description of their business, how their business was doing, and their perspective of the current economy. Janet Goliqhtly, owner of Goliqhtly's Gallery told the committee that she has been in business in this area for over 20 years. At one time she had shops in Northeast Mall and North Hills Mall but has scaled down and has survived and succeeded. Janet enjoys this area. 1 Randy Moresi, CEO of North Hills Hospital, said overall he is optimistic, however more and more non-insured patients are arriving at North Hills Hospital. In the last year North Hills Hospital has given away over 2 ìi million dollars worth of medical care. The business problem he sees is the health care payment problem specifically lack of funds and delays in reimbursement. Randy is positive about health care especially this area and plans to expand the hospital. Mike Riqby, President of Liberty Bank, a bank which is locally owned now has three locations. One at 5801 Davis Blvd., another at 7001 Grapevine Highway and the newest location at 221 Bedford Road. Liberty Bank focuses their business on the Northeast Tarrant area and has 90 million dollars worth of assets. Deposits are growing by 7% however loans are declining because of the recent increase in banks to this area. Liberty's online banking has increased and Mike is very optimistic about business and the Northeast Tarrant area. Alan Younq, is the Owner of Alan Younq Pontiac,Buick-GMC Trucks. In the automobile business there is a window of opportunity to sell vehicles depending on the payment structure. Factory programs stimulate his business because they offer easier payment plans or 0% interest for a number of years. Alan would like to see more activity at the mall which would bring more traffic passing by his business. He a Iso expressed to the committee t hat his service business was very good and that he had no problem hiring employees. He's hoping the renovation of the mall will provide a new image for the area and increase traffic flow. Linda Timmons, President of Bates Container, Inc. said that the last couple of years their business has been flat however this year sales are up. Most recently, last month sales were up 20%. Most of their business is food and health related. Bates Container is negotiating the purchase of more land for expansion. They are also opening a plant in Longview, Texas and have spent $3 million on a new corrugator and have added more sales personal. Bottom line, business is good. Randy M oresi brought u p the discussion 0 f the timing 0 f t he I ights located 0 n Davis Boulevard. Bo Bass addressed this issue by stating that cities with a population of 50,000 or more are in fact the owner of the light system and the new lights needed to be timed. The City is aware of the timing situation and will be looking into. Dan Quinto, Developer of HomeTown, mentioned that the new elementary school is currently under construction. He is anticipating 200 new independent living units will be developed next year along with 175 apartments. Retail space will be also be developed around the planned library. HomeTown has received national attention however the development is job driven. The expansion of UICI is a plus and he is looking forward to the mall renovation for increased sales. HomeTown is holding steady, and Dan is encouraged by the new school being built and is counting on the school to increase the sale of new homes. 2 David Nelson, Owner of David Nelson Attorney Office, is an estate attorney and is one of the new members to the Economic Development Advisory Board. He is pleased to be a business owner in NRH as well as a homeowner. David is also a board member for the Northeast Tarrant Chamber and is pleased with the partnership between the City of NRH and the Chamber. He would like to see more retail and restaurants come to the area. Laurie Dunlop, Manaqer of North Hills Mall talked about the recent closing of the remaining businesses located at the mall on October 15th. The owners needed to liquidate the assets. Some buildings will come down, the Mall has been working with the City and Hospital, and the current goal is to start with the medical building. The mall will be considered mixed use as the owners are negotiating with a movie theater, i mprov comedy g roup a nd more restaurants. Laurie reminded everyone that Mervyn's and the Artisan theater are still open at the mall and asked everyone to support these businesses. Mike Rigby asked about the extension of Davis reaching to Highway 114 in three years. Oscar addressed his question and confirmed that Davis Blvd. would be extended to 114. He also mentioned the plans for effectively changing the Mid Cities/Davis Boulevard intersection. The possibility of lowering the speed limit on Davis Boulevard was also discussed. John Pitstick introduced the new Economic Development website, www.nrhupclose.com and then briefly reviewed the survey, which the board members filled out after breakfast. Overall, the businesses are going strong and the economic outlook for this area is positive. Without further business, the meeting was adjourned.
