I. Call Meeting to Order- Meeting called to order at 6:27 p.m. by
Chairperson Karen Russell. Board members Janet Golightly, Anita Jones,
Ron Moore and Shelley Nicholson were in attendance along with
Bethany Grohman, our new adult volunteer /rotating judge.
ll. Approval of Minutes from Prior Meeting
a. Ron moved to approve minutes from 07/28/08 meeting, Janet seconded.
Copy was signed by Karen and Anita (secretary). Prior to the agenda
being addressed, Heather mentioned that Board Member Danny Perkins
has resigned from his seat in Teen Court.
III. Update to Board on Scholarship Funding
a. Heather updated the board that the letter to community businesses was
finalized with the deletion of "end of year" phrase. As of date, we have
not heard any responses from our vast mailings.
b. Discussion thereafter generated around the number of youth eligible for
the scholarship (one Senior at this time according to Rebecca). Rebecca
then reviewed how the Teen Court no longer qualifies to receive financial
allocations from the city's Donation Fund.
c. After further review, especially confirming that our youth contribute
extensive community service hours to our city, we concluded that we
should propose certain options to city council:
i. First, Rebecca would follow up on the process of including the
Teen Court as a donation choice on the water bill with a
potential flyer to insert as advertisement.
ii. Also, Heather would ask the Judge if youth can donate
monetarily toward the Teen Court as a reciprocal for
community service hours. We discussed possibly a $10
donation for 3 -5 hours. A vote was not conducted.
IV. Discuss Recruitment Ideas for Teen Attorneys
a. Heather opened the discussion based on Judge McGinty's concern of the
lack of youth participating as attorneys. Rebecca added that their initial
enthusiasm tends to dwindle and it is reflected in the inconsistent
commitments.
b. After a round of discussion, we finalized that our target audience to
recruitment would consist of area homeschooled and church youth
groups.
i. Heather will forward information to Karen to pose invitation to
organizations such as the Creative Arts in Action and Texas
Homeschool Coalition.
ii. Any further ideas are to be emailed to Heather.
V. Adjournment- Once all in favor, the meeting was adjourned by Karen
at 7:40 p.m.
