HomeMy WebLinkAboutLIB 2009-05-21 MinutesMINUTES OF THE LIBRARY BOARD OF THE CITY OF NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, TEXAS HELD IN THE LIBRARY BOARD ROOM LOCATED AT 9015 GRAND AVENUE Present: Kay Schmidt Don Tipps Mary Shilcutt Avis Crisp Mike Madar Jane Birkes Absent: David Nelson Kathy Antropik Staff Present: Steve Brown Kelly Preston May 21, 2009 Chair Board Member Board Member Board Member Board Member Board Member Vice-Chair Alternate Library Director Administrative Secretary CALL TO ORDER Chair Kay Schmidt called the meeting to order May 21, 2009 at 6:06 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Minutes of the April 16, 2009 meeting were approved with one change. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT Mr. Steve Brown updated the Board on the following: Circulation numbers remained high during April. The Library Film Festival ended May 16th. The program will resume in September. Careers.com held a job fair in the Community Room on May 15th. More than ten employers including military recruiters were onsite to meet with the public. Flutasia will be performing in the Community Room on May 22nd North Richland Hills Library submitted a grant application to the International City Manager's Association but was not selected to receive the funds. The funds were going to be used to purchase a mobile laptop station for small business training with SCORE and the Small Business Development Center. Dave Edmunds, Director of the Small Business Development Center at Tarrant County College, will fund $13,000 towards the cost of the portable computer lab. Jack Lynn and Tricia Pieper were hired to fill two vacant page positions at the Library. Mathew Gonzales, age 6, made a donation of $1.31 towards the purchase of library books. Mr. Brown gave a brief presentation of Mango Languages, an online tool for learning foreign languages. The license allows unlimited use, and there are several languages to choose from. SUMMER READING CLUB PREVIEW The Summer Reading Club will begin June 1St. The theme this year is "Libraries, Deep in the Heart of Texas." It is an eight-week program for all ages. Area businesses donated prizes for readers, and several special programs are lined up for participants. Research shows a positive correlation between summer reading programs and retention in reading and math skills over summer months. DISCUSS 2010 LOAN STAR LIBRARY PROGRAM The Library received just under $20,000 in Loan Star Library grant funds this year, and the grant is expected to increase next year. The CD/DVD cleaner and polisher was purchased approximately twelve years ago with Loan Star Library grant funds. The polisher is worn out and will have to be replaced since parts for this model are obsolete.
