Bullington motioned to approve the minutes. Doris Tipps seconded the motion and
the minutes were accepted as written.
3. Discuss Keen America Beautlful Certiflcatlon Process
Members discussed the certification process items left to be completed. Jay Garner
asked what the advantage is to becoming a KAB affiliate. Debbie York answered
that being a KAB affiliate will give credibility to our local KNRHB and also access to
over 1,000 other nationwide affiliates as well as national public/private partnerships.
KAB affiliates are also eligible for community grants, special programming, and
many other benefits. Debbie York reported that the Organizational Structure,
Administrative Structure, KAB Litter Index sections of the Certification Report have
been completed. The last two sections will be complete by the next meeting in
October.
4. Discuss Recycle More School Art Contest
Committee reviewed Dianne Spradling's summary of last year's contest and
teacher's comments. One suggestion was to get the info out to the teachers sooner.
Suggestions include:
Hold contest in slower time of school year such as 1/20/10 thru 3/1/10 when
there is no TAKS testing and no Spring Break.
Put as much information as possible on line
There was a discussion on once again limiting the contest to BISD schools.
Committee decided to pass out information on 1/10/10, which will allow 5 weeks for
the contest to run. Submissions (except art work) will be due on 2/12/10 and items
will be reviewed at the 2/16/10 KNRHB meeting. Winners will be announced at the
City Council meeting on 1/25/10. The art work should be delivered to the Library on
2/11/10 and 2/12/10. Dianne Spradling will contact Library to reserve room. Drop
off will be between 4:OOpm and 6:OOpm. It will be on display at the Library on
2/13/10 from 9:00 am to 12:OOpm. For cloth bag entries, teachers will be asked to
check all spelling. A shopping bag vendor offering a larger imprint area will be used
for printing of the winning entry. Prizes will be as follows:
Grade 1 Kids - $10 Teachers - $25
Grades 2-3 $20 $25
Grades 4-5 $25 $25
Middle School $50 $25
High School - 1st $200 $50
High School - 2"d $100 $50
The Committee decided to try the High School portion of the contest one more time.
Last year's results were not as expected. Will consider posting on U-Tube to
possibly get more entries and make it easier to judge. It was decided that the
contest would be open to Public Schools only as this is still a pilot program. The art
work will be judged on both creative use and artistic use of the materials. Rules for
the High School Award will be changed to include no animation. Drama and Theater
Depts. may be consulted on wording of rules. If there are no High School entries
that are "deemed worthy", no prizes will be awarded.
There was a brief discussion of the details of the Trash Bash to be held on 10/3/09.
In an effort to conserve funds, Kathy Luppy volunteered to act as the DJ and run the
children's games. Pizza will be served to the volunteers beginning at 11:00 am.
Committee decided to change time of future meetings to 5:45 pm.
5. Adlournment
