CALL TO ORDER
Chair Kay Schmidt called the meeting to order September 17, 2009 at 6:03 p.m.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Minutes of the May 21, 2009 meeting were approved as written.
SUMMER READING CLUB
Ms. Liz Brockman updated the Board on the 2009 Summer Reading Ctub.
It was another successful year for Summer Reading Club. There were 1,513 children
and 516 adults who enrolled in the program. The children read a total of 23,030 hours,
and adults read a total of 10,900 hours. Mad Science of Tarrant County and Creature
Teacher were among the most popular special programs offered this year with over 300
children and parents in attendance. Chess Club had 43 members by the end of Summer
Reading Club.
LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Mr. Steve Brown updated the Board on the following:
Mark Hindman was selected as the new City Manager and will officially start work on
October 1St
Repairs to the roof and replacement of ceiling tiles are underway as we continue to find
leaks during rainy weather conditions.
Health Markets, one of the largest employers in North Richland Hills, made a $500
donation to the Library. The donation was used towards the purchase of two additional
tables in the Community Room.
Dana Penhaker, Library patron, donated a total of $1,000 to the Library. Books
purchased with the donation funds were plated in memory of her mother, Patricia Jule
Lindsey.
On July 22nd, the Library hosted a Guinness World Record breaking event as David Slick
successfully set a new record in juggling three balls for over twelve hours.
Circulation numbers are higher than ever before with a 24% increase over last year and a
48% increase over atwo-year period.
The new due date reminder email service began this week. The new service gives
patrons athree-day advance reminder of due dates for library materials. Ms. Avis Crisp
suggested that patrons who are checking out books and/or paying late fees be notified
about the new service.
Cup and Chaucer is now offering nachos and hot dogs during the "Pictures & Popcorn"
movie events. Children's Halloween movies will be shown every weekend during the
month of October.
The budget for books this year is $263,000. The Loan Star Library Grant is $28,648 this
year and is a 40% increase from last year. The Library will use $4,000 in grant funds on
the increase in cost of the wireless voice-activated communication system budgeted two
years ago at $8,500. The system now costs $13,000. Another $1,000 will be used to
send a librarian to the Guadalajara Book Festival to help expand our Spanish Language
Collection. The funds will cover the cost of transportation. Meals and Lodging are
provided.
Upon inspection of the DVD/ CD polisher, Todd Humble, Technical Services Supervisor,
discovered that the pump is working properly and only the water-supply hose needs to be
replaced.
Construction will soon begin on the Grand Avenue Park Plaza. An art sculpture made
from aluminum and glass will be installed in January 2010.
The design phase of the new Recreation Center is underway. The proposed location is
the property adjacent to the northwest side of the Library.
