LIBRARY USAGE AND STATISTICS REPORT
The number of volunteer hours at the library has increased, and meeting room usage is
up this year. There was a decrease in public computer uses and a decrease in number
of library visits. There were no significant changes in circulation in October compared
with the same time last year. Adult program attendance increased this year. Pictures
and Popcorn Film Series will continue this fall.
UPDATE ON RECREATION CENTER CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULE
A notice to proceed with construction was issued to the builder of the new Recreation
Center on November 19. The ground breaking ceremony will be December 9. The
opening is scheduled for February 2012.
DISCUSSION OF EBOOKS IN PUBLIC LIBRARIES
Steve Brown gave a presentation on the history of eBooks to the Board.
Two forms of eBooks include audio books with spoken words that are recorded for
playback and digitized text that can be read on computers and other electronic devices.
eBook sales are projected to reach almost one billion dollars by the end of this year.
Forrester Research expects this market share to triple by 2015. Seven percent of
current Internet customers are eBook readers and read 47% of their books in digital
form. Users of e- reader devices read 66% of their books in digital form.
The librarians have been weeding out subscription reference books that are available
and more updated online. The money saved will be used to buy access to Overdrive,
which offers thousands of eBooks.
Last year sales of print books totaled nearly 23 billion dollars compared to nearly 1
billion in electronic books. In 1999, there were about 120,000 new hardcover books
produced in the U.S. Production grew to about 190,000 volumes in 2007, and
decreased to about 175,000 volumes over the last two years. Production and sales of
fiction books have also decreased.
Digital rights management, a method of controlling access to copyrighted material in
digital formats, and lending of equipment such as e- readers are some issues to
consider as the market for eBooks continues to grow.
