There was no recording Secretary during the meeting. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT — Steve Brown After 25 years with the NRH Library, Administrative Secretary Brenda Lewis announced her retirement effective April 30. Her position will not be immediately advertised to permit an examination of the job and the many roles that are assigned to it. Circulation will nearly equal the level of last year for the first time since budget cutbacks last March reduced the number of new materials available to the public. The Library has temporarily stopped issuing new cards to Bedford residents in the wake of their library's closing, but we continue to provide service to existing card holders. There has been recent public discussion of the issue of a south branch library. Mr. Brown distributed a summary of all the council discussion of the concept, and updated the board on the process of acquiring land needed for the new library in Home Town and a proposed realignment of Cardinal Lane to improve access and traffic flow. STATUS REPORT ON ARCHITECT SELECTION PROCESS — Steve Brown Four architect firms are expected to interview on April 22 for the job of designing our new library. The firms have been asked to prepare a site plan, a schematic floor plan, and an elevation drawing for the interview session. NRH BUDGET UPDATE — Steve Brown Mr. Brown distributed a summary of the budget request submitted for the library, and there followed a brief discussion of the priorities and amounts requested. One new program proposed is a joint project with other Northeast Tarrant county libraries to conduct a "One Book, One Community" program next year. The overall budget picture for the city remains troubled, with modest increases in the property tax revenue picture offset by declining sales tax revenues. The result of continued pressure on the library budget will be felt most in the book budget. DISCUSSION OF INTERLIBRARY LENDING POLICY PROPOSAL There was a brief discussion of the new state requirement that TexShare members become lending as well as borrowing libraries, and a review of an initial draft of a policy to govern lending. The proposal will be considered at the May meeting after changes suggested by the Board and staff have been incorporated. The next meeting was scheduled for May 19, 2005. This meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m. Steve Brown Minutes of the April 21, 2005 meeting were recorded April 21, 2005 and transcribed later on January 26, 2007.
