CITIZEN COMMENTS There were no citizen comments. 3 -a. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES OF THE AUGUST 6, 2012 MEETING APPROVED MS. COMPTON MOVED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF THE AUGUST 6, 2012 PARK AND RECREATION BOARD MEETING. MR. PENA SECONDED THE MOTION. MOTION TO APPROVE CARRIED 4 -0. Page 1 of 5 Introduction of new staff members: Mr. Gary Bechthold, Superintendent of Parks, introduced Tanner Arwine who has been hired to fill the position of Landscape Horticulturalist. Ms. Sharon Davis, Assistant Director, introduced Sarah Green who has been hired to fill the position of Cultural Arts Coordinator. 4 -a. COMMON GROUND COMMUNITY GARDEN UPDATE Ms. Vickie Loftice introduced Dianne Spradling. Dianne serves as the Volunteer Community Garden Coordinator. The Texas Master Gardener Association recently acknowledged the Common Ground Community Garden by awarding 2 nd place for exemplary achievement in the Project category in the "Large Association" group. Dianne commented that the Boy Scouts have been a huge help with the addition of many amenities to the garden such as the shed, pergola and benches. They have also started a Junior Master Gardener Program with 20 kids participating. 4 -b. ADVENTURE WORLD PLAYGROUND UPDATE Mr. Bill Thornton, Assistant Director, introduced Jason Moore, Park Planner, who is taking a lead role in the redevelopment of the Adventure World Playground. Jason has been working with our consultant, Dunaway Associates in completing a site analysis of existing conditions and early stages of design. Public input meetings are scheduled for October 11 at 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. and will be held at North Ridge Elementary School 4 -c. PARK MAINTENANCE PLAN OF WORK FOR 2012 -2013 Mr. Gary Bechthold, Superintendent of Parks, provided a brief summary of activities planned for FY 2012 -2013 and reviewed the following: • Research and utilize new technology • Integrate North Tarrant Parkway into the system • Enhance basketball and sand volleyball courts • Evaluate contracting landscaping services • Playground inspections • Integrate facility and safety procedures and inspections Park and Recreation Board Minutes October 1, 2012 Page 2 of 5 4 -d. RICHLAND TENNIS CENTER END OF YEAR REPORT Ms. Charlotte Wylie, Tennis Center Manager, presented the year end report for the Tennis Center. Highlights include: • Revenue is up 6% compared to FY11/12 • League revenue is up 10% with an increase of 20% in enrollment • Beginner /intermediate Tennis Camps increased 41% • 3.5 Ladies Senior Team advanced to Nationals which will be played in Indian Wells, California on October 12 -14 4 -e. DEPARTMENT UPCOMING EVENTS Ms. Sarah Green, Cultural Arts Coordinator, presented information on upcoming events. Stormy Salsa, Saturday, October 6 from 7:00 — 9:00 p.m. at Stormy Plaza Hoot n' Howl, Saturday, October 27 from 5:00 — 8:00 p.m. at Green Valley Park Veterans Day Celebration, Friday, November 9, at 11:00 a.m. at Liberty Park Run Run Rudolph 5K Run & Fun Walk, Saturday, December 1, 3:00 p.m. at NRH Night of Holiday Magic, Saturday, December 1 from 4:00 — 8:00 p.m. at NRH2O 4 -f. NRH 2012 SEASON SUMMARY Mr. Frank Perez, NRH Operations Coordinator, presented a summary of the 2012 Season for NRH Family Water Park. Highlights of the "record breaking year" include: • Survey numbers increasing from 9.43 for 2011 to 9.46 for 2012 • Food & Beverage Revenue increase due to opening of Sharkey's • Record Attendance of 272,336 • Record Revenue of $4.66 million • Wags & Waves — 539 dogs and 739 guests • Participated in the World's Largest Swimming Lesson • Featured in "Extreme Waterparks" • Probably the most telling statistic is the guest willingness to visit the park again at 99.52% and their willingness to recommend the park to others at 99.52% Park and Recreation Board Minutes October 1, 2012 Page 3 of 5 5 -a. ASSISTANT DIRECTOR'S REPORT ON CURRENT PROGRAMS AND SERVICES Ms. Sharon Davis, Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation, presented an update on activities and events offered through the NRH Centre, Tennis Center, Senior Center and Cultural Arts. Highlights include: • NRH Centre membership types as of September 19, 2012 — 4,071 • Birthday Parties are averaging seven per weekend • 52 Group Fitness Classes offered every week • Turkey Burner Event scheduled for the day after Thanksgiving from 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. and consisting of 30- minute group fitness classes. • DFW Hoop School will be held on October 13 for ages 7 -12 • Fall Adult Softball registration is up 41 % • Fall Adult Kickball League continues until November 14 at Fossil Creek Park • Since April 21, 2012 56 events have been hosted at the Grand Hall. The Senior Center is sharing the space during non -peak times. • Senior Center Arts & Crafts Fair scheduled for October 25 & 26 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. • Senior Center Thanksgiving Lunch scheduled for Wednesday, November 14, 11:00 a.m. • Cultural Arts Sponsorships received: Chesapeake Energy — Santa Level Presenting Partner for Night of Holiday Magic of $5,000, Wal -Mart Foundation to benefit special events of $2,000, Texas Commission on the Arts — Artistic Fee Subsidy Grant for Stormy Salsa of $1,306. 5 -b. ASSISTANT DIRECTOR'S REPORT ON PARKS CAPITAL PROJECTS Mr. Bill Thornton, Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation, presented updates on the following capital improvement projects: • Calloway Branch & Little Bear Creek Trails —Bids will be issued in January 2013 • NRH Long Term Development Plan — Request for Qualifications advertised for professional services for the development of the plan 6.
