HomeMy WebLinkAboutLIB 2014-02-20 MinutesMINUTES OF THE LIBRARY BOARD OF THE CITY OF NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, TEXAS HELD IN THE ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES LOCATED AT 9015 GRAND AVENUE February 20, 2014 Present: Don Tipps Avis Crisp Kay Schmidt Karen Alexander Kathy Antropik Holly Mitchell Absent: Staff Present: Jerry Sorenson Cecilia Barham Christine Evans Chair Board Member Board Member Board Member Board Member Alternate Board Member Library Director Administrative Secretary CALL TO ORDER Chair Don Tipps called the meeting to order February 20 at 6:00 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Board Member Avis Crisp made the motion to approve the minutes; Board Member Kay Schmidt seconded the motion; the minutes of the January 16 meeting were unanimously approved as written. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT Cecilia Barham updated the board on the library's statistics from January. REPORT ON WORK GROUP PROJECTS Cecilia Barham updated the group on the progress of the staff work groups: • Customer Service: Ms. Barham explained that the customer service work group has rolled out their document and has implemented methods of recognizing staff internally. • Marketing, Outreach and Planning: Ms. Barham noted that this group is working to manage the spring programs. • Reader's Advisory: Ms. Barham explained that this group has created a Goodreads account for the library and gave a quick overview of the website. She also noted that our New Book Alerts service is now the main feature of the library's website. Ms. Barham also showed -off the shelf - talkers that this group will be implementing and gave a brief description of their purpose and goals. This work group is also working to develop an online and paper reader's advisory form. REPORT ON PROGRAMS AND EVENTS Ms. Barham reported that during Take Your Child to the Library day 33 new library cards were made and over 400 people attended the various events in the library that day. Ms. Barham also informed the group that the Love Your Library Concert Series was going well and has met the library's initial goal of creating a spontaneous cultural experience for patrons. Ms. Barham described what the library would be doing to celebrate Youth Art Month. TSLAC 2014 SPECIAL PROJECTS GRANT Ms. Barham described The Maker Spot, an idea formulated in partnership with the Tarrant Makers that the library will be submitting to the state in March for grant funding. OTHER BUSINESS Ms. Barham updated the group on the status of the Friends of the North Richland Hills Library. The steering committee is still meeting monthly and is working to define membership levels, create an information brochure and determine incentives for members. Ms. Barham noted that the library will be hosting a volunteer appreciation luncheon on March 5. Ms. Barham informed the group that the library staff are working to migrate their ILS software and anticipate to be using the software by May 19, 2014. Ms. Barham noted that the new ILS software will save the library around $23,000 per year. NEXT MEETING DATE The next meeting will be held on March 20, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. in the Library Board Room.
