CITIZEN COMMENTS There were no citizen comments. 3-a. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES OF THE JUNE 2, 2014 MEETING APPROVED MR. PENA MOVED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF THE JUNE 2, 2014 PARK AND RECREATION BOARD MEETING. MS. TIPPS SECONDED THE MOTION. MOTION TO APPROVE CARRIED 4-0. 3-b. ELECTION OF CHAIR AND VICE CHAIR MS.TIPPS MOVED TO NOMINATE MS. MARTY KUSMIERSKI FOR THE POSITION OF CHAIR. MS. COMPTON SECONDED THE MOTION. Page 1 of 4 MS. TIPPS MOVED TO NOMINATE MR. MIKE FILIS FOR THE POSITION OF VICE CHAIR. MS. COMPTON SECONDED THE MOTION. With there being no other nominations Vice Chair Filis closed nominations and called for the vote. MOTION TO APPROVE CARRIED 4-0. 4-a. MANAGING DIRECTOR'S REPORT Save the Dates — Park and Trail Openings • Adventure World Playground ribbon cutting —Thursday, September 18 • John Barfield Trail ribbon cutting —Thursday, October 9 at 10:30 a m. • Calloway Branch Trail ribbon cutting — Saturday, October 11 at 9:00 a m Park and Recreation Facilities Development Corporation Meeting • The annual budget meeting of the PRFDC will be held on Monday, August 25, 2014 at 6:15 p.m. Temporary Closure of a Portion of Walker's Creek Trail • A portion of the Walker's Creek Trail will be closed for approximately six months to make way for construction of a new residential area next to the HomeTown Lakes. Detour signs will be installed to help trail users navigate their way along the trail. 5-a. ASSISTANT DIRECTOR'S REPORT ON PARKS CAPITAL PROJECTS Mr. Thornton presented updates on various projects completed to-date that are not normally reported on: • John Barfield and Calloway Branch Trails — The trails are nearing substantial completion with final grade work, sign placement, grass establishment and striping yet to be completed. • John Barfield/Cotton Belt Trail Connector—A Change Order was processed with 2L Construction to complete the final connection between the Cotton Belt Trail and the John Barfield Trail. • Adventure World Playground — Installation of the playground equipment has been completed. Remaining items include the pouring of the rubberized safety surface material and general cleanup. Park staff is constructing the Woodland Excursion boardwalk and deck The grand opening and ribbon cutting will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2014. Park and Recreation Board Minutes August 4,2014 Page 2 of 4 • Tennis Center Infrastructure Maintenance — American Tennis Courts completed the resurfacing of all the tennis courts. • Richfield Park Improvements — We Build Fun, Inc. has been awarded the contract for the replacement of the Richfield Park playground equipment • Park Pond Edge Treatment— Landshore Enterprises performed extensive survey and geotechnical work in late June. They are gearing up to begin the pond edge stabilization of the Green Valley and Linda Spurlock Park Ponds. 5-b. ASSISTANT DIRECTOR'S REPORT ON CURRENT PROGRAMS AND SERVICES Ms. Sharon Davis presented an update on activities and events offered through the NRH Centre, Tennis Center, Senior Center, Grand Hall and Cultural Arts. Highlights included' • NRH Centre's cost recovery is currently at 119% (with the general fund contribution included). • The NRH Centre celebrated National Recreation and Parks Month by offering a 15% discount on annual paid in full memberships for the month of July. • SilverSneakers hit their second highest revenue month in June 2014 with over $12,300 received in revenue. • The Aquatics Division will host the 20/20/20 "iTri for Total Distance" (mini triathlon) on Thursday August 14 and Saturday, August 16 at the NRH Centre. • Summer Adult Softball has 85 teams registered • The NRH Senior Center is hosting the NE Tarrant County Jamboree on Friday, September 26 from 10.00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Grand Hall. • Preston Steblein has been hired as an Assistant Tennis Professional for the Tennis Center. • RTC will host the Texas Special Olympics Area 11 Tennis Competition on April 25, 2015. • Acclaimed sculptor Seppa Aarnos donated a new public art piece to the City of NRH "Scholars", a nine foot tall work in metal, was installed on the grounds the NRH Public Library. • NRH will host its second Pop Up Gallery this Fall. Date, location and time, to be determined. • The Signal Art Program received a new addition at NRH2O Family Water Park. The signal box located at the entrance to NRH2O features Nancy Lamb's "Up the Lazy River". The NRH Signal Art Program once again captured media attention and was featured on Channel 11 News The Program will also be featured in the August release of 360 West Magazine's "Cool Stuff' issue. • The Grand Hall hosted 153 events since October 1, 2013 and has another 30 definite bookings scheduled through the end of the fiscal year. • Grand Hall staff attended the Fort Worth Bridal Show on Sunday, July 20, 2014 which was held at the Fort Worth Convention Center. NRH2O FAMILY WATERPARK UPDATE Mr. Frank Perez, NRH2O General Manager, presented updates on the operations and maintenance of NRH2O Family Water Park. • NRH2O has experienced very challenging weather patterns this summer When there have been a string of good weather days, the park has performed very well. • Dive In Movies continue with The Lego Movie scheduled for Friday, August 8 and the rescheduled Despicable Me 2 scheduled for Friday, August 15 • NRH2O is offering $5 off general admission during the month of August for anyone who donates three school supply items. Items collected will be donated to BISD PTA. • Fireworks are scheduled at NRH2O for Saturday, August 16 at approximately 9:15 p.m. • The Doggie Beach Bash is scheduled for Saturday, September 20 from 10 00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Proceeds this year will benefit the NRH Animal Adoption & Rescue Center 6. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS Ms. Loftice noted that the October Park and Recreation Board meeting will be held at the Common Ground NRH Community Garden. 7.
