DISCUSSION OF BURSEY ROAD SENIOR ADULT CENTER
City Manager Sanford explained to Council that federal regulations require buildings to
be brought up to ADA standards with the expenditure of $50,000 or more. Mr. Sanford
advised that for Council to accomplish their proposed improvements to the Bursey
Road Senior Adult Center it would have to be brought up to ADA standards. Mr.
Sanford advised that it would cost approximately $61,000 to bring it up to ADA
standards and an additional $36,000 would be needed for the construction. Staff
explained the work that would need to be done to the Center and presented a proposed
plan to the Council to add on to the building and bring it into compliance with ADA
standards.
Council discussed various options with the City staff: 1) gutting ,the existing restrooms
and building new ones; 2) adding one room now and additional space later at the top of
the building; and 3) razing the building and building a new facility. Council discussed
whether the Center would meet the future needs of the seniors in the northern area of
the City. There was discussion concerning the grant and the allocation of the grant
between the renovation of the Bursey Road Senior Center and the Glenview
Neighborhood Park.
Mr. Sanford advised that if Council desired to add a room on to the building, the
additional money needed could be funded from the savings from the landscaping and
irrigation of the new City Hall. After further discussion by Council, consensus was to
place an action item on the next City Council agenda to fund the additional money
needed for the construction and to bring the building up to ADA standards as presented
on the plans by Staff.
Mayor Brown adjourned the meeting.
