03. Introduction of Jared Miller, Assistance City Manager
Jared Miller introduced himself to the board members.
04. Shelter Expansion Project Update
Jared Miller presented the shelter updates to the Board.
• Previously it was to be at the old Neighborhood Services location but due to the
property constraints another piece of property was sought out.
• There is 2.5 acres of developable land at Dick Fisher N and Iron Horse and that is
where the new shelter will be built
• Copies of the new shelter's floor plans and architectural renditions were and
handed out and explained by Jared.
• Sponsorship plans were shared with the Board: i.e. sponsorship of the
lobby/reception area and even possibly the building if a donor contributed a
substantial amount.
o Pam Burney commented that it is very common now to have city buildings
named after a donor
• Some of the sponsorships and donation levels included:
o Sponsorship of the lobby/reception area, get to know rooms, pet gallery,
individual kennels,pavers, etc.
• Dr. Jed Ford asked it there were plans to a surgical unit. Jo Ann Stout said that
there is allotment for it and if someone came forward to sponsor it we would
accept their sponsorship, but the surgical suite is not being advertised.
o Dr. Jed Ford brought up the issue of vaccinating upon intake as a the
shelter is not the actual owner of the animal
o There was some discussion of whether state law required and holding
period or not
o Staff was tasked with gathering the information to bring back to the next
Shelter Advisory Board Meeting
• Jared Miller explained that the new facility will be approximately 10,303 square
feet in size
• That the property has some space for expansion of a surgical center, an additional
sally port and/or addition dog kennels
o Discussion began about the proper air exchange
o Staff was tasked with finding that information out (based on the ASV
Guidelines) and to report back
• 10:48 am—Tito Rodriguez excuses himself due to a prior engagement.
• Jared Miller showed the Board the `Mr. Bones' PSA, the new shelter donation
webpage and briefly discussed the `Ask Brochure'
o Pam Burney commented the video was little dark and it was difficult to
see some of the animals.
o Dr. Jed Ford agreed with Pam's observation.
• Timeline for everything is after Council approved our direction on August 12,
2013 and then staff will be in the silent phase for about 6 weeks. After the silent
phase is over we will be actively pushing the public fundraising portion.
• Jared Miller estimated that around October sometime we would start turning
earth.
o Pam Burney stated that we needed to be careful not to get too much of the
building started or completed before we ask the big donors because then
the donors will think ` why give if you already have it built'
• Pam also stated that donors want to see community involvement
05. Adjournment
Dr. Jed Ford motioned to adjourn the meeting at 11:43 am. JoAnn Stout seconded. No
objections.
