CALL TO ORDER
Chair Don Tipps called the meeting to order September 21, 2017 at 6:00 p.m.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Mr. Sorenson moved to accept the minutes; Ms. Antropik seconded; the minutes were
unanimously approved.
LIBRARY BOARD MEMBER RECOGNITION
Ms. Barham proposed the board to discuss a way to acknowledge Ms. Crisp's years of
service to the library board and North Richland Hills community. All members recommended
planting a tree and placing a plaque in her honor.
NEW MEMBER WELCOME
Ms. Barham welcomed and introduced new library board member Krina Traywick, who
briefly introduced herself.
LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Ms. Barham reviewed the library's statistics from May 2017 through June 2017 with the
board and answered questions. Mr. Sorenson praised the Library for all the programs
offered to the community.
REPORT ON PROGRAMS AND EVENTS
Ms. Barham reported on past Library events including:
• The Mayor's Summer Reading Club, with 2,428 participants and 102,806 hours read.
5,339 people attended the programs, which were full every Thursday.
• The Birdville Reads program: kick-off on 6/3/17, from 10am-1 pm at the BISD Arts &
Athletics Complex, with 1 ,376 participants.
• The Great Gatsby Screen Play Event on 7/27/17: this event was the first of a
signature series that will bring classic literature and a movie adaptation screening.
Participants were encouraged to dress according to the 1920's theme and had a
brief book discussion before watching the movie.
• Behind the Book Luncheon with author Tess Gerritsen on 9/07/17: 62 people
attended the reception, 140 were present at the speaking event and approximately
90 books were sold. The Friends of the Library had 9 new members and 1 lifetime
new member enrolled.
• Behind the Book Luncheon with author Gretchen Rubin on 9/15/17: 50 people
attended the reception, 120 were present at the speaking event and approximately
95 books were sold. The Friends of the Library had 4 new members enrolled.
And upcoming Library events including:
• The Behind the Book event with author Alice Hoffman on 10/11/17 at 1:00pm.
• The Behind the Book event with author Roseanne Montillo on 10/20/17 at 1:00pm.
• The Library annual Book Sale from 10/6/17-10/9/17.
DISCUSSION OF FINES, FEES AND AUTORENEWAL
Ms. Barham announced the approval of the Autorenewal service by the City Administration,
with its first phase starting by the end of March 2018.
REVISED PATRON BEHAVIOR POLICY
Board members discussed and unanimously approved the proposed revision which will take
effect immediately.
GRANTS UPDATE
Ms. Barham informed the board that the Library received the TSLAC Grant to purchase 75
STEM kits for the Maker Spot. The maker kits will be available for check out in March 2018.
The Library also applied for the Google/ALA Grant which intends to help develop young
people to be IT workers. The decision will be announced in October.
DIGITAL LITERACY PROGRAMS
Ms. Barham reported the success of adult computer classes (Computer College and
Computer Master Classes) among the community.
PERSONNEL UPDATE
Brandon Farner was promoted to Library Technical Assistant in the Reference Department.
Interviews are being conducted for the Library Technical Assistant position in the Circulation
Department. A Library Page and a part time Library Clerk positions are currently vacant in
the Circulation Department.
NEXT MEETING DATE
The next meeting will be held on October 19, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. in the Library Board Room.
