HomeMy WebLinkAboutLIB 2019-09-20 Minutes MINUTES OF THE LIBRARY BOARD OF THE CITY OF NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, TEXAS HELD IN THE LIBRARY BOARD ROOM LOCATED AT 9015 GRAND AVENUE September 20, 2018 Present: Don Tipps Chair Jerry Sorrenson Board Member Bill Wait Board Member Holly Mitchell Board Member Krina Traywick Board Member Mary Robbins Board Member John Keigley Board Member Absent: Kathy Antropik Board Member Staff Present: Cecilia Barham Library Director Courtney Kincaid Assistant Library Director Cathy McNeely Administrative Secretary CALL TO ORDER Chair Don Tipps called the meeting to order September 20, 2018 at 5:58 pm. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Mr. Sorenson moved to accept the minutes; Mr. Wait seconded; the minutes were unanimously approved. NEW BOARD MEMBERS Mr. Tipps welcomed new Library board members Mary Robbins and John Keigley. Present Library board members and Library staff introduced themselves to the new members. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT Ms. Barham reviewed the library's statistics from May-August 2018 with the board and answered questions. Ms. Barham mentioned a 6-9% increase in circulation during this period. REPORT ON PROGRAMS AND EVENTS Ms. Barham reported on past Library events including: • Behind the Texas Badge book event on 5/29 at 6:30pm: 157 people attended and 137 books were sold. • Birdville Reads event on 6/2 from 9:OOam-12:OOpm at the BISD Sports Complex: 1 ,800 people attended. • Jennifer Eagan Author event on 6/11 at 1:15pm: 137 people were present and over 100 books were sold. • Mayor's Summer Reading Club: the Library had a record number of hours read — 118,058 hours with 2,699 total participants. Furthermore, the Library offered 72 programs/events in 8 weeks with 4,208 people attending. This year the Reference Department also introduced summer programs for adults. • Library Fall Concert Series: with the World Music theme this fall, the Library hosted El Patio Flamenco performance on 9/10 at 7:00pm. And upcoming Library events including: • Computer Master Classes: fall lineup include Word, Excel and Internet Security. • Library Annual Book Sale on 10/5-10/6 and 10/8. • Mid Cities Teen Book Fest on 10/20, from 11:OOam-5:OOpm. REVISED VOLUNTEER POLICY Board members discussed and unanimously approved the proposed revision which will take effect immediately THE MAKER SPOT SERVICE MODEL CHANGES Ms. Barham gave a brief history of The Maker Spot to new board members and explained the new service model adopted that will generate revenue from memberships, fundraisers and corporate sponsorships. Mr. Tipps and Ms. Mitchell complimented Ms. Barham for all the achievements and services the Maker Spot provides to the community. PERSONNEL UPDATE The Circulation Department has two open internal positions: one part-time Circulation Clerk and one full time Library Clerk. A part-time Librarian position is open in the Children's Department. NEXT MEETING DATE The next meeting will be held on October 18, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. in The Maker Spot.
