PRESENTATION/DISCUSSION ITEMS E.1 Discuss Keep America Beautiful Kristin James advised that the Commission is definitely a member of Keep America Beautiful and that dues have been paid. A Litter Index needs to be completed. It was decided that it would be done during the May 2020 meeting. The members will meet at 5:45 pm on May 19, 2020. The City will be split into areas and members will drive 5-6 streets in each area and grade them. E.2 Discuss Governor's Community Achievement Award (GCAA) Kristin James advised she will be going to Austin on 3/2/20 to participate in the judging of the statewide entries for this award. This will give her an opportunity to see what Keep Texas Beautiful looks for when choosing an award winner in the future. Page 1 of 2 E.3 Discuss ideas for KNRHB programming that targets the City's youth. It was brought up that the participation in the Recycle More contest is very low for various reasons. One suggestion to improve it might be to offer scholarships to winners. Kristin met with the BISD elementary coordinator who had some questions and suggestions. The Commission discussed the below various ideas: 1. Which NRH schools to approach first? There are 9 NRH elementary schools and they could be divided into "clusters" of 3 schools each, which are in the same area. The Commission could begin new activities at only 1 cluster in the beginning. The various clusters were discussed. 2. The grade levels were also discussed, with everyone agreeing that 2nd grade is ideal. If the same Grade level is used every year, over time, all students will benefit from the programs. 3. Any programs or activities need to be more "hands on"for the students. 4. Develop an activity which celebrates Earth Day,which is on April 22,this year. It may be too late to organize something large, such as an assembly, but this year items could be handed out to students to take home such as a flower in a pot, or the cups that the Commission already has, with the KNRHB logo on it. Earth stress balls were suggested, also. 5. Kathy Luppy advised that she felt having an assembly would be a great way to reach many students at the same time. It would need to be interactive to keep the interest of 2' graders.Videos could be shown and items to take home passed out. 6. Another idea was to develop a KNRHB mascot, similar to TxDot's Darrel the Barrel. It was agreed that students would be very excited about something like that. It would be included in the assemblies. 7. Kristin James will research various items available and get prices. 8. Recycle Bingo cards and games was also suggested for activities with the students. E.4 Discuss KNRHB Commission shirts The members chose Blue Moonlight for the color of the new shirts, which will be Port Authority shirts. Members gave their sizes to Joyce Fister to order. F.
