HomeMy WebLinkAboutKNRH 2021-09-21 Minutes MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE KEEP NORTH RICHLAND HILLS BEAUTIFUL COMMISSION FOR THE CITY OF NORTH RICHLAND HILLS,TEXAS, HELD AT THE North Richland Hills CITY HALL 4301 CITY POINT DRIVE SEPTEMBER 21,2021 The Keep North Richland Hills Beautiful Commission of the City of North Richland Hills, Texas met for a meeting on the 21st day of September, 2021 at 5:45 p.m. in the Community Room at City Hall. A. B.2 PUBLIC COMMENTS No Comments C. ACTION ITEMS C.1 Approve minutes of the September 21,2021 Keep North Richland Hills Beautiful Commission meeting. Minutes were approved unanimously with no corrections. D. PRESENTATION/DISCUSSION ITEMS D.1 Discuss Results of the 2021 Trash Bash Kristin James presented the results of the 2021 Trash Bash that was held on September 25, 2021. • Saturday, September 25, 2021 • Over 220 volunteers • 33 miles of NRH roadways and trails cleaned • Approximately 2,400 lbs of trash was picked up • Lunch donated by the Chick-Fil-A's located at 820/Rufe Snow and Precinct Line/Grapevine Hwy D.2 Review and Discuss the Results of the 2021 Litter Index Study Kristin James presented the 2021 Litter Index Study results. She explained that A Litter Index Study is a comprehensive assessment of the overall appearance of the community in regards to litter. In order to remain in good standing with Keep America Beautiful, a Litter Index Study must be completed each year. Page 1 of 3 - This year's study was completed by Neighborhood Services Staff between 11/1 and 11/12 by the Code Compliance Division of Neighborhood Services and the score for 2021 is 1.44 which is about .05 better than 2020. D.3 Review and Discuss the Results of the 2021 Virtual Seminars Kristin James presented the following results to the Commission— • April—Edible Landscapes—170 • DIY Rainwater Harvesting—91 (25 Free Rain Barrels) • June—Tough Plants for North Texas—227 • July—Tough Texas Lawn Care—74 • August—Gardening with Ornamental Grasses—101 • September—DIY Sprinkler Repair-87 • October—DIY Drip Irrigation -81 • November—Trees for North Texas with Tree Giveaway-54 • December—Basics of Landscape Design The Commission members were extremely happy with the outreach these classes provided and look forward to continuing to provide this learning opportunity in 2022. D.4 Discuss Classes and Schedule for 2022 Kristin James presented the list of available classes for 2022 offered by the Tarrant Regional Water District.The Commission members will send in their top picks for classes by the end of the month, so they can be scheduled.The commission wanted to look into having some classes in person and some classes virtual, so even more people can be reached in 2022. D.5 Discuss Classes and Review Green Campus Award Winners Kristin James presented the two applications received the Green Campus Awards from St.John the Apostle Catholic Church and North Ridge Elementary School. Both applications met all the criteria for the Green Campus program so both schools will receive their monetary award and sign to celebrate their accomplishment. D.6 Review and Discuss the Environmental Education Gran Program Kristin James reported that there were not any applications submitted for this program this year. Administration for each NRH school was contacted 3 times since the end of the 2020/2021 School Year regarding this program. Feedback received is that teachers are just too busy this year and are not able to take on additional projects. The Commission discussed pivoting the available money to a new program, possible a scholarship. Kristin said she would look into similar scholarship programs that would fit the work of KNRHB and also look at how much money is available for the program. D.7 Discuss Christmas Lighting Awards Kristin James presented that nominations will be accepted until 3:00 pm Friday, December 10.Judging will take place on Sunday, December 12 and Monday December 13 if needed from 6:00 PM —10:00 PM. All judging will be completed by 10:00 PM, Monday, December 13.Judging by the Commission will be based on arrangement,variety, and overall "WOW!" factor. Winners will be announced Tuesday, December 14. The Commission agreed that judging needed to occur as a group this year. So it was decided that the members would meet at City Hall on Sunday, December12 at 4:45 pm and judging would start shortly thereafter. Page 2 of 3 D.8 Discuss December Adopt A Highway Cleanup Kristin James proposed the following dates for the cleanup—January 3 or 4.The cleanup would start at 9:00 AM. The cleanup would be geared toward high school students who need community service hours.The Commission said either date would work. D.9 Discuss December Adopt A Highway Cleanup • Common Ground Community Garden Spring Gardening Seminar •February 12, 2022 •Library Community Room •9:30 AM—12:00 PM • Virtual and In-Person Classes(Discussed Earlier)—Once a month • Photo Contest -Spring • Offer training to BISD teachers during the summer •Options—Waste in Place (6 Hours), Project Learning Tree (6 Hours) •Not sure what the cost would be for these • Trash Bash—End of September • Recycle More Art Contest—This can coincide with America Recycles Day in November • Christmas Lighting Contest- December F.
