STAFF PRESENT: CALLED TO ORDER: APPROVAL OF MINUTES: LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT - Steve Brown The downward trend in circulation statistics is expected to continue. With current budget restrictions, staff is unable to meet current materials demand. Both patrons and staff have responded very positively to the new carpet. The recently added WiFi area of the library has the capacity of 250 simultaneous users. The parks department will take over the care of the garden at the library entrance this spring. The process of choosing an architect for the new library is undeway. Hopefully, by the end of February, the selection committee can begin scheduling interviews. UPDATE ON LIBRARY LEGISLATIVE ISSUES - Steve Brown Discussion followed on the importance of support for several library concerns the Texas Legislature will consider this session. Among the issues are the continuations of the telecommunications discounts for libraries, schools, and institutions of higher education, library online resources for Texas students, appropriate funding for the TexShare databases, support for school libraries, and Loan Star Library direct aid grants. Mr. Brown invited members to attend the Texas Library Association's Legislative Day in Austin on February 15 to visit with legislators to encourage support for library Issues. PRESENTATION AND DISCUSSION: LIMITATIONS ON ACTIONS AND STATEMENTS- Postponed DESIGNATE A LIBRARY BOARD REPRESENTATIVE TO THE ARCHITECT SELECTION COMMITTEE - Steve Brown Following discussion, Mr. Brown will submit Ms. Kathy Antropik's name to city administration as the representative of the NRH Library Board to the selection committee. DISCUSSION OF TOPICS EMERGING FROM CITY COUNCIL GOALS SESSION HELD ON JANUARY 14, 15 - Steve Brown In planning discussions concerning city facilities, the new library was high on the council's priority list. Mr. Brown will update members on the results of the goals and objectives session when summaries are available. The next meeting was scheduled for February 17, 2005.
