STAFF PRESENT:
CALLED TO ORDER:
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT - Steve Brown
The library will close for carpet replacement on November 18, 19, and 20. Library Design Systems
will coordinate with carpet layers to add new carpet to the public areas of the library.
An order for 20,000 library cards has been placed with updated library contact information.
Although there are still details to work out, staff is hopeful of beginning the process of selecting an
architect for the new library in January 2005.
Both Fort Worth and Denton Libraries will join the Answer Zone as it expands to 24 hours a day, 7
days a week in November. This will bring the number of participating libraries to eight with
Arlington expected to join next year.
DISCUSS LIBRARY BOOK/MATERIALS BUDGET ALLOCATIONS FY2004/05 - Steve Brown
Mr. Brown reviewed a handout with details of the FY2005 materials budget allocations. The amount
available from all funds will purchase about 2,000 volumes fewer than last year. Included among the
expenditures are periodicals, microforms, reference databases, adult and children's reading
materials, audio books, DVDs and videos. Staff will be working on a plan that will minimize damage
to the collection within the budget restrictions.
REVIEW OF TEXAS PUBLIC LIBRARY STANDARDS - Steve Brown
Mr. Brown distributed a summary of the 2004 Texas Public Library Standards recently adopted by the
Texas Library Association Council and accepted by the Texas State Library and Archives
Commission. The guidelines are based on population and include basic, enhanced and
comprehensive ratings for library collections, accessibility to services, library personnel education and
training, information services, and technology. Although NRHPL ranks high on much of the criteria,
the current 2.7 library materials per capita needs improvement.
The October edition of Hennen's American Public Library Ratings ranked NRHPL second among
Texas libraries serving populations between 50,000 and 99,999. Only a much larger and better
funded Richardson Public Library scored higher.
The next meeting was scheduled for November 18, 2004. This meeting adjourned at 8 p.m.
